Default Has anyone used any sites like Elance, freelancer.com, etc.
If so how was your experience? How are you getting business? I have been looking at these sites wondering if it is a way to get my foot in the door.

Don't use odesk - the bids are way too low and the one response I received was a scam. I've heard good things about elance but I haven't tried it yet. Just be wary of bidding too low for work and make sure you don't give out all of your info until you've check out the job/company thoroughly.

Good luck!

Hi Angeline

I used Elance for a couple of weeks and got one job from it. It seems that people advertising there are looking for cheap labour though. I haven't put any further effort into bidding for jobs with them.

I'm a newbie here but I've tried both places and I wasn't happy , this is why I'm venturing out on my own.

I will agree don't use either they're either a scam or they are looking for very cheap labor.

I have had a couple of clients off of Odesk and just did not like it. I am worth more than $1 an hour and alot of the posts want bids at that amount. I just cannot compete with that. I have not checked out Elance or any of the other ones yet.

Thanks everyone. The bids are shockingingly low.

I looked into odesk a few years ago. At the time, I thought it would be great but they have turned into a lowest bidder forum.

I have not used Elance or Freelancer, but I have used vWorker. From what I have seen in comparison with Odesk the going rates are somewhat higher on vworker and you are guaranteed to get paid if the job is completed accurately in a timely manner. I have read on other va resource sites that joining these sites are a good starting point for building clients. But vworker has a strict policy about off site contact and it could lead to your account being closed.
My experience on vworker was so/so, I bid $20.00 to reformat an ebook for kindle. You have to bid low in order to get your first job, because like ebay they give you a rating. The deadline was 3 days, but after it was complete the employer kept adding things he wanted done to the book without paying extra. Best of luck!

I tried Elance, but it was very time consuming searching for anything that paid a decent amount or that needed my services. I finally decided to just do it on my own.

Yes, that is another thing I found I did not like about the sites - how time consuming it is to find something you are experienced at or worth the money. But even when you do you have these guys from India bidding so low I wonder do Americans even get any jobs.

I have not been back on since I read the replies here.
