Question Has anyone heard of Flexjobs.com
Has anyone heard of Flexjobs.com? I was thinking of using them to build my business. Has anyone ever used them before?

I hadn't heard of this site so had a quick peek - I noticed that the freelancer/job seeker pays a fee to have job opportunities funneled to them. I can't say I'd want to go this route for a few reasons - not the least of which is, paying someone to funnel job opportunities to me. I see a strong focus on the whole 'employee/employer' relationship there, which of course defeats being self employed and running your own business.

Perhaps a better direction would be to carefully fine-tune the types of clients you want to work with (what niche, what industries, etc.) and spend your time marketing to and networking with them.

To me, this just seems like a job board which doesn't really jive with the kind of business or lifestyle I've worked hard to build.

With all that said, I completely understand wanting to cover all possible bases when you're first getting started, and anywhere that seems to have potential to send you clients and/or work can be intriguing. I just think it's important to protect and preserve your 'business owner' status - and going through a job board is probably only going to be an uphill battle as most posts are employers looking for employees. Do you want to be an employee?

Looking at their new jobs list I only saw THREE freelance 'jobs' and only two of them were truly 'telecommute' (and only one was truly 'freelance' - the other two were employed positions)... So, is it worth $15 or more a month for a handful of 'opportunities'? I'll be very interested to know if you decide that it is - and certainly wouldn't hold it against you But there's my two cents!

Thanks Tess, I hadn't thought of that. It does not make since to pay to get information that will not help to build my business. That is the reason I wanted to have my own business so that I could be the boss! So I will cross this off my list and look into doing volunteer work to get my name out there and to network with other people.

Glad I could help, even if it was just to keep you in that 'business owner' mindset

I remember years ago when I transitioned from "unskilled labor" to being an admin, my teacher in my business program said that no reputable agency would charge you a fee to find you a job. That is still true. If you were looking for an office job, you would be leery of any agency that expected you to pay a fee. It's the employer who pays the fee. Therefore, I would be hesitant to sign up at any job board that charged me a fee to get work. I'd have to do some serious research into it before handing over my money.
