When I first learned about
The Girls' Guide to Building a Million-Dollar Business by Susan Wilson Solovic, I thought it would be a perfect choice for review on the VA Forums, which are full of enthusiastic, determined small business owners. Some of you are just starting out and some have been in business for years – no matter where you are in the process, if you have any desire to someday run a million-dollar business, this book is for you.
According to a 2006 report from the Center for Women’s Business Research, there are 10.4 million businesses in America that are at least 50% owned by a woman, yet fewer than 3% of women-owned businesses gross one million dollars or more each year. Solovic believes this isn’t just due to a lack of desire; she thinks it has more to do with a lack of understanding of what is truly possible and how to make things happen.
This book is a guide to help more women achieve million-dollar status in their businesses, regardless of whether they sell products or services. Solovic shares advice and words of encouragements from a variety of woman entrepreneurs who’ve grown successful businesses, along with her own tips based on her experience in growing and operating a million-dollar business.
The Girls' Guide to Building a Million-Dollar Business starts with the basics, honing in on the fact that you have to believe in yourself or you won’t get anywhere. Other key factors to success, Solovic notes, are sheer determination and sharing your dreams with the world. That’s right, shout it from the rooftops! Solovic says you should share your dreams with everyone you know (taking care to avoid the naysayers), and then take actions to make it happen.
Other sections of this book include tips to help you lay the groundwork for your business growth, from creating a peer support network to finding a mentor to share ideas with.
The next few sections show readers: (1) how to create a vision for their business, which Solovic believes is vital to business growth; (2) how to surround yourself with the right team of people to help propel your business to the next level; (3) how to implement the best marketing strategies, which includes creating a killer brand that will stick out among the competition; and (4) how to fund your business growth. This last section was probably the hardest for me to grasp, and I think a lot of women have trouble when it comes to money and, specifically, asking for it. Solovic shows women business owners how to overcome gender bias, find potential investors and perfect your pitch to seal the deal.
Solovic also cautions women not to grow too quickly or abandon their vision just to land the next big deal. She talks about developing smart partnerships and reaching out to untapped global markets.
Last but not least, Solovic tells readers how to define your own measures of success and pay yourself what you’re worth, among other helpful advice in her final thoughts section.
The Girls' Guide to Building a Million-Dollar Business also includes a fantastic resources section that points hopeful women entrepreneurs in the right direction to get the help they need to grow their businesses.
All in all,
The Girls' Guide to Building a Million-Dollar Business is an interesting read that shares a wealth of valuable resources.
