The marketplace is inundated with business books that many individuals flock to for guidance and inspiration. I am finding it to be increasingly more difficult to find a business book that “speaks” to you, let alone one that specifically addresses the challenges women face in operating a business. So I am sure you can understand my joy when I came across The Boss of You: Everything a Woman Needs to Start, Run, and Maintain Her Own Business by Lauren Bacon and Emira Mears. The authors mention early on in the book that one of the main reasons they wrote this book was because of the “…lack of business books that tell you it’s okay not to want to strike it rich.”Needless to say the title and their reason for writing this book grabbed my attention, but the style and type of information shared is what truly enables readers to resonate with the authors’ message.
I was immediately impressed and found myself constantly shaking my head in agreement with the information shared in this book. Regardless of what stage you are in on your journey, you will definitely find information that can be applied to your situation. This book is packed with a lot of information that is shared at just the right pace with a great balance of humor that will keep readers entertained. Unlike many of the business books on the market, Bacon and Mears realize that their readers are unique individuals that have different standards and ideas of what they consider success and go through great lengths to help their readers embrace this concept.
The book is divided into three sections (Starting, Running, and Maintaining) that allow readers the ability to “skip” to the parts that pertain to their situation. I love and appreciate the authors’ ability to discuss the financial aspect of starting a business without getting swept up into using business jargon and acronyms. I believe many people will find this chapter particularly useful because the authors walk readers through the process of how they should price their products or services. Pricing is definitely something many individuals struggle with because they often are not “…comfortable with just how much [they’re] worth.”
Bacon and Mears help readers navigate the process of how to develop an identity for their brand, the best avenue to promote it, how to get the help you need to operate or expand, etc. This book literally answers every possible question you may have in starting and maintaining your business. They get straight to the point and empower their readers by sharing their story and those of other successful women entrepreneurs. I highly recommend this book for those seeking a shortcut to decrease the amount of time it will take to master being the boss of you.
This book was published in 2008 and contains 312 pages. The price of this book is $15.95 and can be purchased on Amazon.
