Default Organizing Business Cards
Recently I decided to purge my business card rolodex. In the stage that I am in within my business I am more interested in the quality of contacts vs. the quantity.

When I was actively networking I would keep the cards in my rolodex after adding their information in Outlook. I was also very selective on whose card I would take. I always write notes on the back of their cards pertaining to our discussions as well. If they were an interesting individual I would then send out a note card to them within a few days as a follow-up.

For those of you who are now actively attending social networking events and obtaining those handful of cards each time, how do you organize them when you return back to the office? Do you immediately add them to your contact manager and discard the business card, or do you keep them in a traditional card file? Also, how do you go about following up with the new contacts you have made, do you have a system in place that you'd like to share?

This is a great question! I got my system from the book Endless Referrals (I keep mentioning it, I know, but it's GREAT!).

Like you, I write notes on the back of my cards. When I get home, I enter the card (and notes) into my CRM and, as I'm doing that, I address a hand-written "nice to meet you" card to send out. They're mostly pre-done, I just add any personalization from the conversation we had at the event (or wherever I met them) and then out the door they go.

It is a great personalized touch. It's actually a service I'm contemplating offering to my clients as people really respond well to it.

Right now I'm not using anything because I'm not actively networking. But, for my last business I used Relenta and I'll probably go back to that. I like that it's a SaaS program so I can access my email and entire CRM system from anywhere I have internet access. It's also pretty inexpensive (and can be free, depending on your level of use). It's also scalable if you really start growing. http://www.relenta.com/

It should be available at most large book stores. I got mine at Borders.

Endless Referrals by Bob Burg. You might be interested to know he's a member at LinkedIn and good friends with some of the people I hang out with at a LinkedIn forum.

I attend local networking events too, and I pretty much follow the same procedures as the rest of you. Whenever I receive a card I make notes on the back of it of where I met then and any other tidbits of info I need to remember.

When I get home I enter them into my address book, along with any notes I took, categorize them by event, then I toss the cards. The only cards I keep are cards from my referral group, I use these cards to hand out to referrals for the other members.

Kathie, is that Vincent's group? I've seen him mentioned a few times there.

I'll have to check out that site (relenta); I had just thought of using outlook and creating a separate contact list then my main one and if there was any activity made from those business cards collected I would add them to my main contact list.
