I actually didn't know anything but the meaning of it being a strong symbol for dominance or power since its the highest in the deck but researching info on it made the case more clear for me after the post on possible bad connotations. You notice you don't hear any other connotations for any other ace really. So ace of spades is pretty symbolic. My background in communication studies research kind of makes me keen on looking for strong symbolism when it comes to business messages and I figured if I going to be symbolized by an Ace I want it to be strong especially being a woman in a research field since it is largely male dominated (though women are definitely making themselves known). I know one of the blogs I plan on doing is going to be looking at business messages from a communication studies standpoint to help business owners create effective messages without so many words. Symbolism is super important and I think it can make or break you. For example, to someone who thinks Ace of Spades are a bad card, they may link that to my business so its kind of a risk. But perhaps I could also provide the diamond as an option for those who prefer less dominance. I'm open! I am partial to the spade as well Nancy.

Great info on why you chose the Ace of Spades, Shandon. After reflecting on what I wrote, I say go for it! I really love your idea and the concept behind it - and your design is totally awesome.

If anyone is "offended" or otherwise put off by the negative connotations sometimes associated with the Ace of Spades, perhaps they wouldn't have been a good fit as a client anyway.

Oh I also agree with the part about it not being necessary to include the words "website" and "email" anymore

I usually make my own business cards - but ended up giving in and ordering through Vistaprint. Haven't gotten them yet. Loved design I chose - BUT just thinking -- LIKE YOURS, mine is dark front & back so no longer will be able to sketch note on back etc. Something to keep in mind - at least you will have plenty of room on the front.
