Default Name Suggestions for event planning VA business
Hi everyone:

After talking to a few of my friends who are event planners, I have decided to go into another direction all together. In lieu of word processing and transcription, I have decided to go the event planning industry.

I was thinking:

The Assisted Affair
Tagline: An Administrative Consultancy for Bridal/Event Consultants

or
The Administered Affair
Tagline: Administrative Consultancy for Bridal/Event Consultants

I need something that lends to that idea that I do not plan events, but rather assist planners.

So far the assisted affair is the one I really like, but I am open.

Cheers,

Caroline

Cool niche! I have to be honest that the first reaction I had to your first name was that it is a dating service of some type. It's the word "affair" that I'm honing in on. When choosing a name, you have to think of all kinds of things - such as how will a name cause your business to be perceived regarding what it actually does vs. what someone may at first glance think it does.

I do love the tagline though! But are you consulting for Event Planners, or are you actually going to take on some of their administrative responsibilities? Consultancy means that you are offering someone your expert advice. Here's a wiki definition, to help you with this. > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consultant To be a consultant you would go in and assess and advise them on what they can do better with their business. Consultants don't do hands on type of work.

I know that I'm not coming back with things you probably want to hear....sorry. :-(

May I suggest looking here > http://www.virtualassistantforums.co...business-22305 This was posted elsewhere in this forum, and I believe it has helped many when naming their business. I especially like #3 on the list because had I thought of that early on I wouldn't currently be on my 4th business name, which is now just my name, because I do want to expand.

Don't just take my feedback though. I'm just letting you know my first reaction. Interested to see how it plays out for you.

You are telling exactly what I want to hear. I need a name that as soon as you hear it, you know what I do and if you thought something else, I have to consider that. And I am a tad ashamed (I'm and English Major, so I should know better)

I'm also thinking Soiree Secretary. But I am just not coming up with ANYTHING! UGH!

Thanks for your comments, Pam.

Wow this is a tough one. I too would lose the word "affair" as it does make me think of a dating service. The Administered Event sounds better but it doesn't really say what you do as it sounds as if you are doing the planning rather than assisting the planner.

For SEO purposes, especially in a specific niche, you need a name that contains a word or words that people search on for whatever help they need. Go to Google Adwords and play about with various words and see how often they're used in searches. https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeti...=KEYWORD_IDEAS.

I think I'm getting closer. So far I have

The Social Secretary

The Consultant Concierge

But no tags lines for either one. This is really difficult, but I have to start working on my site IMMEDIATELY, I have two people that might actually be interested in getting started soon.

Hi again, Caroline. If I were you and you have people already interested in your services, I wouldn't worry about the website. I went 4 months without having my website completed when I first started, and still got work. I just simply told them that my website was under development.

I love The Consultant Concierge, but please be grammatically correct with that. It should be "Consultant's" - I do want to come back to my earlier comment about the word consultant and make sure that's who you are actually going to be supporting. Consultants, I mean. Otherwise, if you are going to be actually supporting planners, then perhaps you should stick with The Event Planner's Concierge (which actually could be the tagline).

Why not just brand you?! Caroline - The Event Planner's Concierge. Wish I knew your last name. But even JUST Caroline has a tremendously classy sound to it, and savvy as well. Think of it being written out on your website and marketing materials in a really fancy font, slanted, like an artist's or celebrity's signature might be.

BTW...another thought. Leaving it as just The Consultant's Concierge, if consultants will be who you support, makes it sound like you support any kind of consultant. You'd probably want to consider putting the word "event" in there.

Thank you, Pam!

And my last name is Wright (Caroline Kelli Wright) I thought about trying to find a way to use the words planner, coordinator or consultant because those are those words that are most common in the industry: e.g.

Event Planner
Event Coordinator
Bridal Consultant
Bridal Coordinator (the official associations: Association for Bridal Consultants/Association of Event Planners)

which is why I wanted to focus around those words.

You've given me a lot to think about and incidentally, one of my last thoughts (before I finally went to bed last night) was "Maybe I should just use my name"

Your tagline says to me that you are providing services to other consultants, not that you are the consultant....is that what you want to convey?

Caroline,

The way I am understanding this is that you are not the event planner but rather you want to assist the event planner. Is this the case?

I ask you, (and I ask not in a critical way) why do you believe that an event planner will need an assistant? Or rather, do you think you can create an entire business just from working with event planners? [If you are offering other services, then I'm on the wrong track.]

I know you said you had friends who were event planners. Were you planning on working with them? Can they supply enough work for you to run a business just assisting?

I am not discounting that assisting event planners may indeed be something you can pursue however, I feel that it narrows your target market greatly. Unless someone is a 'high end' (for lack of a better term) event planner, who may need an assistant to help plan affairs, you may find that the one-event planner operation, handling one or two events per month may not need an assistant. Or if they do work with you to farm out the details such as ordering flowers or invitations, will this be enough work?

My guess is that if you pursue the smaller event planning market, you may need to juggle a number of jobs at once which means a lot more marketing to gain that following. (Again I am not sure if you worked out a steady plan with your event planning friends.)

I also feel that if the event planning friends close out their own businesses for whatever reason, you have less work.

So I am wondering why you just don't create an event planning business that you will operate solo?

Janine

Janine:Your questions are absolutely valid.

Is there enough work? I honestly have no idea. I do know that most small event planners (who work like VAS in their home and not in an office) do not have any admin support at all. Most of them try to do it all themselves, and run themselves ragged. A friend of mine said she's literally noticing shabby work (she owns a nonprofit and uses event planners a lot) and that it was apparent to her that this came from trying to do it all themselves. I am aware that there's that this will require some education - most event planners have never consider using a VA, although every one I asked actually knew what a VA was.

Why don't I just open my own event planning business? Because they're are too many things that I don't know that would take a considerable amount of time getting up to speed on to run it effectively. Answer part two: I live outside of Alexandria, VA which boasts the most non-profits, plus I'm 20 minutes away from Washington, DC. Event Planning firms are a dime a dozen out here.

I did decide that I will also open a word processing and transcription firm as well. I know it may seem odd to try to run two businesses. It took me a long time coming to this particular place in my decision making. And I just cannot think of how I am going to market "I will assist you in your event planning AND do your transcription." So I decided to separate them. So if I don't have enough work, hopefully the word processing transcription can be a backup.

Hi Caroline,

I see your points. Thank you for sharing the extra information.

I like that idea that the event planners you have spoken to actually know what a VA is...so that allows for a much smoother consultation.

Would you consider event planning for specific events as opposed to being an 'everything' planner? If Wash DC planners come a dime a dozen, I think that by marketing yourself as an expert in one or two specific events could set you apart from all the others.

I just think you probably have more knowledge in event planning than you are stating here to start your own business. And, I think you can make more money; and if you really target your marketing, the business will come to you.

I think you are smart to keep the two businesses separate. However, I thought you could combine both services if you say you are a corporate event planner and you can also transcribe keynote speeches, which are common at these events.

If event planners are a dime a dozen, how many VAs can be corporate event planners (in DC, no less) and offer transcription services, as well? I think this might be your promotional hook...but I may be off track.

As for naming...I would suggest using your name but not emphasis the assisting part. I say this because if you decide to go solo as a planner, the name and the tagline will not be relevant.

Janine

Thank you for your comments. What I don't know/understand is the whole budget thing. How event planners find a space, contract vendors, order food and drinks and still make a profit. I have always been the logistics person: compile the information, rsvp management, creating area guides (for those coming from out of town), registrar services, database management, etc. But the whole find a vendor, get the contract, get the contract signed, find a space- I know Zilch.

And some of the planners do offer someone to take meeting minutes (probably as close as it gets to a transcriber).
