Default Possible dumb question about my business name....
I have purchased my domain name "The Distinguished Assistant" which is also the name I want my company to be. Since it was available as a domain, how can i be sure it's available as a business name for sure? I've searched and searched and it has not come up anywhere. What's the best way for me to have this name as my own? Do I need to trademark? I think I know the answer already but I really want to be sure.

I am from Australia so it is probably a little different if you are elsewhere in the world.

Here we have to register our business names through a government office. This same office also has a business name lookup service, so that you can see if what you want is taken or similar to someone else. Once you get it registered than yes you can get it trademarked so that no-one else can use it.

Cheers

Fiona

In the U.S. we can search through the secretary of state's website for the state in which we live. Google your state's secretary of state's site and follow the link to corporations. You can search the name and if it doesn't appear, then claim it as your own. As Fiona said, once you complete your application, they will let you know if it is taken. However, you should be able to search for yourself as well as I stated above.

Good luck!

Lynn

Hi

You can also see if it's been trademarked here. http://www.uspto.gov/

Thanks!
