Default Making a business name adjustment
Okay, so now that I've settled on my business name, I have come to the conclusion that I may want to "tweak" it a bit.

Currently, my FBN is solely as CustomVA; however, I would like to add Administrative Services to the name.

CustomVA Administrative Services

My questions is, do I have to refile a FBN to include the additional two words or can I just add them on without them being officially part of my business name?

I appreciate your responses.

Thank you.

That's a great question. I would definitely check with your state -- they would provide you with the details you need to make a change to your company's name. In my opinion, I would take the "cross every T and dot every I" method to your business' practices, meaning I would submit a name change with my state even if it's not mandatory. If you have a potential client who wants to submit a query on your company's name, and the whole name of your company doesn't appear, your company may not appear credible. But definitely check with your state.

By the way, I really like the name you have chosen. CustomVA is actually very good on its own, as well as the addition of Administrative Services. Either way, you can't go wrong!

Thank you Patty, I did some research on my county registrar's website, (in California FBNs are done by the different countys only corporations, LLC, and partnerships are handled at the state level...based on my research) but nothing specific as to changes to an existing FBN. It seems that I would need to file a new FBN to incorporate the changes.

I may just do that along with another variation I have considered just to make sure I've "crossed every T and dotted every I" as you suggested.

Thank you again.

I had a similar question and a colleague suggested to keep the name the same but add "administrative services" or whatever it is you want to add underneath the name so you don't have to refile anything.

Great discussion! I've been adding "Transcription Services" after my business name in online stuff only, like Google Places/Maps...The Perfect Word Transcription Services. Official documents like the bank and county just have The Perfect Word. My website just has The Perfect Word as well.

I like the idea of adding it underneath the name!

Anita, I like both CustomVA and CustomVA Administrative Services. I think you would do fine with either one, but will add that adding "Administrative Services" in some form may help with people who have no idea what a VA is! I have to share something funny about this. I have educated a friend of mine about what a VA is. She told me the other night that while watching Jeopardy there was a question about that term, virtual assistant. And she was so excited that she knew what it was while her husband sat there totally confused! LOL!
