I need to create my company profile on the social networks; however, I've read a lot about identity theft and am a bit worried since I am not ready to "open my doors" just yet.
My website is about 85% complete but I need to finalize my business processes, marketing materials, etc.
At what point do you suggest that I create these profiles? I need to add them to my website, and reference them in my marketing materials.
If you're biz name is confirmed, I would go ahead and start setting up profiles and getting involved. You can always add them to your site and mktng materials down the road.
I agree with the others however let me add that if you do not have an EIN number you should go do that now. It is free and can be done online at the IRS.gov website. Once completed you will have a business EIN number (you can so this as a solo) and therefore you will never have to give out your SSN to any clients or vendors.
It all depends on what information you are putting on the social media sites. They get a bad name because a lot of people put their DOB, address, email, phone, pet name, etc all over their profiles which is enough information to steal an identity or hack into online banking, etc. General company information is not something you need to hide as it's usually in the public domain anyway and you can't use it fraudulently.
