Default Domain name Vs Business Name
Most companies & small business's tend to use the exact title of their business for their domain. Which I feel is important, but is it the be all and end all of your business if it does not match?

I thought it was important because it would make the website name easier to remember. Also I use the email that came with the website so that too is easy.

Is it the end all if they don't match? I don't think so. Especially if the website is an easy to remember domain.

My domain name is not my full business name. I thought it was better to keep the domain short to reduce spelling errors. I think it's just a personal preference, I'm lazy and I hate typing in long domain names.

My business name is Virtual Business Services of OK, LLC (I dba as just Virtual Business Services)... my domain is VBSofOK.com.

I think brevity is useful for simplicity and remembering, however, there are so many domains out there now, that having a domain very similar to your business name is probably better. Don't forget you can use hyphens in your domain names and in fact, I'd encourage you to buy both, i.e. janesmith.com and jane-smith.com to help secure the domain for yourself.

When I got my first domain in 1996 I bought asecretary.com.au because I was not allowed to buy secretary.com - at that stage generic domains were not allowed in Australia (and I missed getting it when they were released as they never notified existing domain owners - they just released them) and I thought aclaytonssecretary.com.au too long. These days I own both and many variations which all point to the one website. Domains are cheap and a worthwhile investment for part of your branding.

Kathie is so right about the branding investment. You will find it hard to brand yourself with acronyms unless it is something like FedEx (Federal Express)

Also keep in mind that if you can include a keyword in your domain it will make it more searchable on the Internet. I used DIVAConsultant because diva is popular and so is consultant. It does not limited me to one area of VA but to many. I also subcontract out for services that I do not directly provide. I have become a staffing company of VA's as well. I also use my name as a business (dba)

Having multiple domains directed to your main domain is great for the search engines and your business.
