Hi Anita, I started off with a freebie website as I knew nothing about how to design a site etc. Scary stuff! Also Wordpress/Blogger hadn't become as popular and were 'just blogs' and not pages as such. I use Wordpress for a client as her website and really, depending on how complicated you want it, it can be the best option. You can add pages, you don't HAVE to have a blog and it still has the ability to add widgets and individualise the site and she is quite happy with it. You don't have to pay for it (which is always a blessing!) and of course, the bonus is that you get to understand it for when a client wants to do a site or blog ;p
Remember to fill in your meta tags so search engines can crawl. Having your own domain name and a hosted site is always preferable for
SEO as you can register your site with the search engines and set up site maps which are recognised. I have heard that some of the freebies such as Wix or Weebly don't do well in search results, but that is just a comment from someone, so I can't vouch for it. Sites such as that are limited in what they allow you to do, so best to check them out if you want to compare, however Wordpress is very popular and you can switch to a paid/hosted site and not lose your content.
Good luck with it all - it's challenging but fun to learn and play!
Cheers,
