I have been asked on more than one occasion by small businesses to name my favorite social networking website. Now even though I go through the process of explaining to them that social networking expands beyond Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn—I am still cornered into giving them a direct answer to this question. So when I am “forced” into choosing between these three sites, my answer without a doubt is going to be Twitter (sorry Facebook and LinkedIn fans!). I am a bit of a Twitaholic. I am a social butterfly that enjoys learning from and speaking to different people and Twitter enables me the ability to simultaneously do so! I love the ability to be able to interact with people without having to wait for them to add me as a friend or being invited to join their network.
Although, I love Twitter sometimes it can be a bit “noisy.” There are millions of people tweeting quotes, thoughts, industry information, etc. and this can be especially disheartening for small businesses that are new to social networking. Therefore, the question I most often receive is, “How do I get people to follow my brand on Twitter?” There are countless articles that discuss in rather lengthy detail how to accomplish this feat. However, I believe companies should increase their followers by taking the same approach you take when you choose your friends.
