Make that test client yourself. Or a made up company. Actually a made up company might be a good idea. You would then have to think of the kinds of transaction they handle everyday and that could give you a better understanding of the things you might encounter.

I can't remember if I mentioned this earlier in this thread, but if you can find a local college that offers finance courses go there. I'm not saying take the classes, but you could go into the book store and see if they have extra course books for sale. That way you would have access to what the course would deal with and teach you, rather then just going to a mall bookstore and getting a book that may not have the complete steps a bookkeeper/accountant needs. A lot of those books are teaching someone how to handle the books for their own company, not how to handle the books that may go off to the government. And that's the thing to prepare for. Also some of those books may be how to use the software, not how to keep your books.

Kim.

I am considering offering bookkeeping services as well. I have done manual bookkeeping and have a qualification up to profit & loss - don't know if that is the same here in the UK as it is in the states. I use QB for my own bookkeeping although I use the free version at the moment (no way I can afford anything better at the moment). I want to work mainly with start ups and sole proprietors so would probably not need anything too professional. I would like to get a certification but unfortunately cannot afford to pay for a course - I have looked at a couple of tutorials on Youtube, but if anyone knows of a free GOOD course, please let me know

Hello Shadowcat: I'm looking at getting a QB certification as well and plan on getting a QB training manual from either Amazon or Ebay. After doing a thorough study of the fundamentals, Ill then do actual mock test on the software. When feeling prepared, I can take the certification exam at a local testing center. Please note that I was QB's certified several years ago so this process will be appropriate for adding to my accounting background. I wish you the best!

Hello Ladies,

Great posts!! I offer "light Bookkeeping" services as well. I was planning in being more specific in my website because many people do think that I offer full bookkeeping services. I am currently an Accounting Supervisor at my 9-5 job and I do feel confortable doing all the accounting but don't think I'm ready to offer full bookkeeping in my business as of yet.

I am a bookkeeper during the day with the same basic skills, I did find some bookkeeping help online. it is www.dwmbeancounter.com and I really like it. This has answered alot of the questions I have, and the best part is it is free. If you are looking for a refresher or just have some questions it is worth looking at. He breaks everything down so plainly that even those with no bookkeeping knowledge of any kind would be able to follow along and by the time you are all done with his games and quizzes, you have a much better idea. Check it out and let me know what you all think.

I used the Bean Counter last year for a refresher and it is really good - He is funny and actually has quizzes at the end of each session.

Glad I could help ladies, let me know what you think. I actually bought his textbook to go along with the site and I love it. His hardcover book was only like $10.00. Anyway I hope you get out of it what I did.
