A List of Banned Words from 2008 - Do You Have Any To Add?

Posted 12-31-2008 at 03:10 AM by Your Virtual Wizard
Hello,

I read an interesting article about this website which listed overused and abused words in our 2008 lexicon; suggesting these should be banned from our 2009 vocabulary.

I thought I'd start an impromptu list here and ask my VAF peers to give their opinions on which words they thought should be removed from our lexicon. This list would include words which have lost their meaning because we just hear them all too often.

Some words or phrases which I personally have grown weary from hearing (and using) are:
  • Joe the Plummer
  • low hanging fruit
  • Main Street to Wall Street
  • maverick
  • moving forward
  • anything which uses "green"
  • I'll include 'awesome' here but I believe it is still acceptable
  • pop - referring to the addition of color - I hear this on decorator shows too often
  • teleseminar, webinar - anything 'ar' - I use this word myself but I need to coin something else
  • random - notably used by teenagers
  • snap

*Please note that this list by no means indicates that anyone is incorrect in using these words. I'm sure I'll continue using 'green' and 'teleseminar' myself, hopefully with some discretion.

Do you have any words you would like to add to this list?

I would like to add "freakin". It is not a term of endearment and should not be used. I noticed that this is used by many younger folks who think it is an adversion to the "F" word but you might as well just say the original and not "freakin".

And I agree with the following:
random and snap - I have teenagers so enough said on these two words and Main Street/Wall Street - it was way to overused this past year in the elections and needs to stop

I don't mind "green" and tend not to use the term as much anymore, however I do use alot of "green" products but that is just to save some money since I am a Main Streeter and not a Wall Streeter.

Lee,

Your soooo funny!

I'll add 'freakin' to the final list. 'Friggin' could be there as well.

Thanks for your input.

Happy New Year!

LOL, very cute post
Since we don't have or watch television I guess I'm out of the loop on many of these - I did enjoy reading the list!

Nice list. I would like to add:

"Hit me up" or "Hit us up" used in lieu of call me or contact me. Ugh, that is so agitating. My husband told me I am obviously not up with how the kids talk these days. My response -- I just started using "Sweet" so give me a break

Thanks, Darlene for contributing.

2 more words I'm tired of hearing in business:

face-time

touching base

And new for 2009 that I've learned recently, which I hope not to overuse is 'high-touch marketing' so that it ends up on my 2009 List of Banned Words!

Anymore to share?

Hit me up...oops...

Hi there,

Yes, I have a couple that come to mind:

1. Tight (as in great, cool, etc.)
2. Cool (I don't know why but it bugs me sometimes!)
3. Talk to the hand - aaarrrggghhh!!!..makes me cringe..

I'm sure I'll think of some more later. On a side note, the first time I heard the term "tight" my nephew had come over and he was talking about an article of clothing being "tight" so of course I thought he meant it literally in "being too tight", but was educated then on what the wonderful new term meant! LOL

Michelle,

"Tight" drives crazy!

I used the word 'slacks' the other day in lieu of 'pants' and my teen son hit the floor laughing. No one uses the word 'slacks' anymore...sorreeey.

I'll add another to this list as it gets increasingly longer...

chillaxing - combining 'chill' and 'relaxing'...

I best be chillaxing in my slacks! Ha!

This is too funny! Most terms I don't mind. I guess you could say I'm a chillaxer...lol. But there are a couple I really don't like and I think they were already mentioned and that would be "freak-in/friggin" and "talk to the hand". To me they say I'm totally disrespectful and I really don't care about you, what you have to say, or how you feel. So they really are not my favorites.

I also have a teen and so I hear a lot... even my six year old is getting really good using slang phrases and words. I myself am guilty of some of these words, I still use awesome, and I say chill, take a chill pill, or relax, but not 'chillaxing'. Oh...I also use cool. LOL...interesting post. It's nice to have fun too. Thanks for starting this post.
