Getting More Done - Tip #1: Kill Your Television
Posted 06-07-2010 at 11:45 AM by Tess
You're dreaming of being your own boss; you want the work-at-home lifestyle you've been hearing so much about; you're tired of working for someone else, on someone else's schedule; you want to run your own business so bad you can taste it - but who has the time?
You might be surprised to find out that YOU do. In my 'Getting More Done' series I'll highlight ways you can carve out more time in your everyday life to spend on creating the WAH lifestyle you want.
Tip #1: KILL YOUR TELEVISION:
I know it might be hard for some of you to even fathom the idea of life without a television but this is my absolute NUMBER ONE tip for creating more time in your life to spend on living your work-at-home dream.
According to a 2009 Nielson Group survey, Americans spend an average of 151 hours every single month watching television. (151 HOURS a month!?)
That figure doesn't include the average 3 hours of online video viewing each month or the 4 hours viewing per month via mobile technology.
Even if you're not 'the average American', even if you only consume half of the hours Nielson says you do, that's still a whopping 79 hours a month of television viewing.
Now, if the whole reason you're dreaming of working from home is so you can watch more television, then the message I'm trying to deliver here will sorely disappoint you.
But if you're wanting to work from home so you can start your own business doing something that fulfills you; so you can work with people who energize and inspire you, and who PAY you for your time; so you can spend more quality time with your family and friends, with your children!; so you can master the clock and stop scrambling every day on someone else's then you'll take this information to heart and start looking long and hard at the amount of time you spend sitting in front of the television every day.
I challenge you to start keeping track of how many hours of television you consume every day/week/month of your life. Really look at how much of what you're watching is contributing to your dream lifestyle, and how much is keeping you right where you've always been (in front of the TV?).
Now, I just handed you 79 hours (or more!) a month that you can use toward building your business and creating the future and the lifestyle you want for yourself and your family.
What are you going to spend them on?

Girl you are so right. I've NEVER been a huge television watcher, not even as a kid. WE have TV, satellite all that jazz but its solely for my husband. He'll tell you I'm married to my computer.

Hi Alyssa, thanks so much for reading and commenting on my post. Fortunately, my husband shares my feelings about television so no issues there. But he is a carnivore... if only I could get him to go veg, all would be right with the world!

That is the truth! I'm a news junkie and when my husband and I lived in the country (prior to starting a VA business), you couldn't get any decent programming and I'm not about to waste my time on junk. Needless to say, I got a lot of sewing and work around the yard and house done.
Now that we're city-folk, we got cable with our apartment and between my CNN, MSNBC and FOX - and my husband's Animal Planet and National Geographic - I swear that thing is always on. Thankfully, I OD'd on the news and learned to block the rest out. But I don't even like to think about how much time I wasted in front of it. No wonder they call it the "boob tube". LOL |

I am not a big television watcher myself, and even gave away my television in my bedroom, because my children were migrating in here to watch it while I work and I found it very distracting.
I set aside certain times when I sit down with my children to watch there favorite programs. Thankfully my son is at an age now that we enjoy the same programs, but my daughter is still little so we must watch Hannah Montana or Jonas Brothers. The thing is with cable they are always on and she is tempted to sit and watch it. However, if I can work out a way for her to play outside while I'm working I do it. Sometimes I even work outside so she can play depending on the work I have to do for the day. I like a few programs and sometimes a movie, but so often I'm so tired from the day that when I do finally sit down to watch a program with the kids I often slip into a 'coma'. LOL! I neve even had cable before I moved here. When we relocated to so that I could take care of my parents, my parents had become cable addicts, but I guess when you cannot do anything else what do you do? That was their entertainment, their lifeline to the outside world. My children ended up learning about the wonders of television though, and that's something I never wanted for them. I remember when the cable people installed the cable and my son was in awe. He was nine at the time, and was very into sports and outside stuff, and then he discovered cable. Before we moved here we had to rent or buy videos for him to watch because we had 3 tv channels and two of them were mostly news or soaps. The other one did not come in very well, so there was no interest for him in TV at that time. |

We love hulu.com and netflix.com for a few shows we like to watch once in a while and movies/shows for us and for our two year old. I like that it is on-demand, sans advertising (for the most part), and that there isn't another electronic device needed (we just use whichever laptop is closest, no need for a TV)

Love PDoers's comment about the Boob Tube. Exactly what I was thinking.
We have satellite TV, and I'm known for taking the cards out of the boxes to limit the amount of television that's being watched. |

ho ho yea that's right. spending time for just watching television while running your 'working at home' idea is bad in every aspects. but i think spend couple hours for watching movie/tv at night would be alright...

I do not have a television in my office, but two in the household. The only time I watch TV is in the evening (Mondays) and when I go to bed at night (helps me fall asleep). I watch little or no television anymore, and am at the computer from the time I get up until I go to bed.

I too am a news junkie and love watching certain news and political commentary. I also love watching television during the evening. It is like cheap therapy to "veg" out in front of the TV. That being said, absolutely no television when there is work to be done. I don't even have one in my office. It's just way to distracting. I don't even have a radio.
