Empower Yourself
Posted 04-24-2010 at 12:38 AM by RhondaHolscher
Often we are told that we cannot do this or that, and we believe it. Why? Why do we let ourselves buy into other peoples ideas of what we can and cannot do? If there is something you have a desire to do or have been inspired to do then do it. Do not let others dictate your successes and failures. They may be telling you that you cannot do it because they are trying to save you the hurt of failure, but I say the old adage is true, “The only true failure is the one who fails to try.” How do you know you cannot do what you want unless you try. If you do not succeed at it then pick yourself up by the bootstraps and try again. Do not let others dictate what you do or do not do.
Take me for example I am a single parent who for several years took care of both my parents and two children, and when it was time to go back to work I did not have very much support in this effort. Oh sure some people would say you really need to get a job, but so many would say you cannot get a job. You have not worked in almost 8 years and you have no skills. I decided to take matters into my own hands and start my own business. The fact is I do have marketable skills. Sure they were a little rusty, but I took a wonderful course through Hess Business Professionals & Associates LLC and have begun on my new journey to become a business owner/Virtual Assistant (VA). This was not a decision I made lightly. As a matter of fact I thought about it for months. I let so many things discourage me at first, but then I realized what a wonderful opportunity I had staring me in the face and if I passed it up I would be doing myself a disservice.
I am now about 6 weeks into my new business and things are going really well. Do I have tons of clients? Of course not, but I do have some and they are great! I have plenty of work coming in for just getting started. Just a few months ago I had no income, and now I am on my way to building a great business and doing something I love.
I told myself I COULD DO IT, and then I set out to do it. So do not listen to those who say no you can’t. Instead tell yourself you can and believe that you can, because you can! There is nothing standing in your way. Do not let money stand in your way either but be creative and take what you have and make it work. I had no money – zero – zip – nada – (you get the picture) to get me started, but I just took what I already had at home and with a little creativity I am going for it and so should you. If I can do it anyone can do it. Do not get discouraged just go for it! Believe in yourself and empower yourself to do what you desire or feel inspired to do.
I would love to hear from you. Share your stories of empowering yourself to do something or comment on mine. Have a blessed and wonderful journey!

Rhonda, you are so right. In fact, one of the very reasons VAF was started was because someone said some variation of the following to me in two different circumstances: 'You can't [call yourself a VA]' and 'You are not [a VA]'
Good for you for finding your way, and finding your voice! I'm looking forward to reading more of your blog posts here at VAF. |

I am starting out the same way, just with the things I have right now. I am slowly building things up. My friends said "there is no way you can pull this off" But I do have one client now, it know its not much but its a start.

Rhonda, thank you so much for giving encouragement to us. I am just staring as well and have found myself at times starting to think that I cannot do it. But you are so right. I CAN do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. The only time I usually feel like I can't is when people are negative. But from now on I have just made up my mind (thanks so much to you) that I can and will do this. I just have to empower myself with all of the skill and knowledge I have and can get. You have just made my day and I thank you!

Thank you everyone for your comments. I do truly believe that we CAN do this. I am so thankful for the opportunity that the Lord has allowed me and all of you. Just keep on being positive and look to the Lord your strength, and I know you will find encouragement here. So when you need it just come to VAF.
Just an update so you all know. I have kept plugging on regardless of the obstacles I have faced. I only started in February of this year. I now have 5 clients. That's right 5 clients. I was behind on my bills because of my circumstance, and this month I paid ALL of them current and some of them ahead. Persistence and a positive attitude will take you a long way. So keep it up. You are all doing great and you will be rewarded for your hard work. Best of luck in all your future endeavors and may God bless you and yours!!! |
