When I started my Virtual Assistant business I researched it day and night, luckily at the time I was living alone and didn’t have anyone wanting my attention (apart from the cat). So I spent a lot of time online looking at how I could start my business and to get lots of advice and tips, ideally for free.
I wasn’t disappointed, the longer I looked the more resources I found, and even now nearly 6 months down the line I still come across some great websites that I wish I had found when I started.
As an avid reader in my spare time I immediately went to Amazon to see if there were any books that were aimed at virtual assistants, there weren’t many, but one book did stand out and I immediately put an order in, so...

I just want to express my appreciation to everyone who shares on this forum. I am a big believer in "Give and You Shall Receive". I am a new VA and still learning, from all of you. I feel that anything I need to know about being a successful VA is right here. I love it that we can unabashedly call out for help on this forum, knowing there will be many who will rush to give assistance. When we focus on helping others, help will be there for us when we need it, also. I am so happy to have found this forum of great people. Many thanks to all!

I get excited about new apps on my iPhone, or I used to until I started my own business. I still make an effort to check out the new apps available on iTunes, but I’m now interested in what apps can help my business grow and I’ve come across a few recently that are excellent. I thought I would share some of them with you, and if you want to have a go at installing them and letting me know what you think, even better!
Buffer
I’ve been using Buffer for a few weeks now, there are three different plans, I have the free plan at the moment. This offers 10 posts in your Buffer, 1 Twitter account, 1 Facebook account, free browser extensions, free mobile apps and you can use your Bit.ly details. The other plans offer...

I don’t suppose a day in the life of a Virtual Assistant will be that interesting to a lot of people, but I thought it might be nice for those of you that are interested to get an idea of why I love my job!
Background
Having taken voluntary redundancy back in July I decided I wanted to work from home, utilise my skills but not be tied to a 9 – 5 job anymore. The commute alone was taking nearly 4 hours out of every working day so to work from home would benefit me not only because I would be at home, but I would gain more time to get the jobs done I needed to.
I started my business almost immediately, I hadn’t planned it that way, I thought I’d take a couple of months ‘off’, but I was so excited...

So you’re new to Twitter, or you’re new to creating a Twitter account for your business. So who do you follow? Who do you want to follow you?
These are some of the questions I have been thinking about lately. Since starting my business back in August my Twitter following has gradually grown, I think on average around 2 – 4 new followers per day. It doesn’t sound much, but compared to when I was just using Twitter for personal tweets it was a lot less.
Who to follow?
For me in particular I tend to follow people who have interesting things to say. Some I follow because I am interested in the subject, such as books, food and France. But as Twitter is where I promote my Virtual Assistant business...

READ, LISTEN AND LEARN
1. Read all the information available to you in this forum.
2. Read information carefully from other sites.
3. Listen to your friends and family, like my friend Rita, she tells me "you are moving to fast, slow down", and I did slow down.
4. Learn as much as you can and see how far you can go.

You’ve made the decision to begin delegating many of the tasks that eat up your time, which in the long run eat away at your profits. Good for you, you are hiring a virtual assistant!
In my last blog I gave a few suggestions on how to find a qualified virtual assistant and a few tips on finding the one who is right for you. This month I want to share how to successfully get the most out of your virtual assistant and keep her or him around to help make your business a success for years to come.
Get to know your virtual assistant.
Like any relationship, whether personal or professional in nature, it is going to take time to build a strong, trusting, mutually respectful association with your...

Tomorrow I turn the big "40". Can't say as though I'm looking forward to it however I do know I will soon be turning it into the new "20."
The other night I was priviledged enough to attend an event with Kinza a motivational speaker. I really believe it's what I need to help me start this next decade of my life. She told us to take things that are on our someday list and start doing them. We need to visualize, plan and do it. Well I share my vision with you tonight.
A year from now I want to be a work at home mom that has the flexibility to attend my kids events, run out supper to my husband in the field and just plain enjoy life as it comes. I don't want to be frantically hopping from one...

Has this happened to you lately? You’re having dinner with the family and the phone rings. On the line, an annoying marketer trying to sell you something you really don’t care about! Feeling aggravated and disrespected from such an interruption, you just hang-up!
Interruption Marketing
Traditional marketing is often thought of as interruption marketing and usually includes a strategy that focuses on finding customers by creating brand awareness through different forms of advertising. It typically targets a general audience using television ads, print ads, telemarketing, cold calls, direct mail, unsolicited...

When you need to have a project completed, you need it now or by your deadline. If you choose to outsource this task, it’s important that it be completed on time or it might throw your entire schedule off. In fact, you couldn’t run a business properly without deadlines.
Why are deadlines so important to our businesses? We have made promises to our clients and customers, and we want to keep our word. If we miss our scheduled completion date, they are unhappy and understandably so. This is why, that when the business owner has outsourced the task, it becomes imperative for the individual completing the work to understand that the business owner’s deadline is their deadline.
However, meeting deadlines goes further...

This morning I was up early on a call with my contractor. It's been a long day but what I wanted to share with other subcontractors is how important routine is when starting.
I wish someone would have encouraged me to establish a good routine. It helps discipline yourself, focus, have more time for the family and make goals. This client is teaching me in small steps but its working. So get out your calendars and start small by scheduling responding to emails. It's a start in the right direction.

It's been a long morning already. I had my weekly call with my current contractor. The one thing I wish someone had told me when I first started is this whole virtual business is part of the growing is getting thicker skin.
Over the last six months my contractor has done just that. Given me thick skin, in a good way of course.
We've really started to communicate and he tells me what bothers him about my work or what needs improvement. Before this I would have taken offense to it. Now I take it and run with it. It's the best way to learn.

After listening to many other successful VAs' inspirational podcasts I thought this site would be appropriate for these blog posts.
As a virtual subcontractor I want to share my daily thoughts, frustrations and achievements with everyone. It's important that we know that each of us are just ordinary people trying to become successful in the virtual world.
Today as I came up with this idea I was listening to a podcast which is what inspires me. Nicole Dean is the host and she shares others stories of their trials and error. This is what I want to do for other subcontractors. Some day I too will be very successful. Some of the goals I have for myself are:
1. Recurring income with affiliate marketing
2. Make a...

I imagine there are many professionals who at some point of their career have thought about working from a home office. Here are some aspects to consider:
No Commuting
Let’s face it who appreciates sitting in stop-start traffic, whether it’s first thing in the morning or after a long day at the office? Add to that the wear and tear on your vehicle, rising costs of fuel, and contributing to pollution. Sadly, public transportation isn’t always available or a practical alternative, and even when it is you are still faced with the rigors of getting to and from work. When your commute is a few steps down the hall to your home office, it makes a stress-free start to every work day.
Flexible Schedule
Depending...

We've all heard the expression, "You've come to a fork in the road." This usually symbolizes a choice you need to make. Do you go right or veer left?
As the owner of your business, you will be faced with many different forks in the road. Decisions that you will need to make; some will be easy and others will be extremely hard. One such decision you may face, is the decision to raise your rates.
The decision to raise your rates can come with a multitude of emotions: excitement, fear and even self-doubt.
The best way to face a tough decision such as this is to look at it from all sides. Then, ask yourself some key questions.
Let's say you have determined that your rates are...

The death of Trey Pennington last week made me think about how much information we share on social media sites and the consequences of crossing the line of privacy on the web.
Trey Pennington was a well known marketing consultant, blogger and had an online radio show. He maintained presences on all of the major social networks and had over 111,464 followers on Twitter. The morning before he took his life, Trey went on Facebook and posted several family pictures with personal comments (which are publicly visible to anyone). His personal struggles over the last few months were apparently known in his social media circles...

As more and more people use the internet and social media as outlets to vent their frustrations, businesses and brands are learning the hard way to pay better attention to their customers.
"When customers feel that they have no other option but to take their customer services concerns online, that is exactly what they will do. To avoid this, companies need to take exceptional care of their customers, proactively drive solutions from the very first contact, and ensure that customers never have a reason to go outside of the contact center for resolution. Otherwise, greater numbers of savvy customers are going to turn to...

In the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Nick Portokalos says to Toula Portokalos - “Don’t let your past dictate who you are, but let it be part of who you become.” – Dear Abby
There is a great deal of wisdom in this saying. We all have had our ups and downs and have made our mistakes in the past. We shouldn’t let those ups and downs and mistakes dictate who we must be, but rather embrace them and allow them to assist us in making better choices and integrate that into who we allow ourselves to become. Instead of saying to ourselves, “I did this or that” or “this or that happened to me so how I can I possibly do this?” Let’s say to ourselves, “What can I bring from that situation into my life as it is now and learn from it?” or...

When reading, I’ve noticed that most people leave out the final comma when separating three or more words in a series. In looking up the rule online, I have found that the final comma is always used. There is an interesting article on the subject that can be found online.
When you take a college proofreading class, you will find that the comma in a series includes the word before the conjunction. The Gregg Reference Manual, used in one such college proofreading class, states:
|
Quote:
|
|
When two or more items are listed in a series and the last item is preceded by and, or, or nor, place a comma before the conjunction as well as between the other items.
|
Many people, however, leave this comma out. This...

Do you find it challenging to make time for personal development?
During June, I decided to take some time for personal development and become more knowledgeable about Information Communication Technology (ICT) and the direction the region (the Caribbean) was moving in the area of information technology.
According to the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), the Caribbean ICT Roadshow had been developed to raise awareness within the public sector, the private sector, civil society and academia, of the innovative approaches possible and necessary for the effective use of ICTs in government, business and social development.
The programme was designed to educate and demonstrate the transformative...

This month’s blog post does not have anything to do with business. It isn’t cute. It isn’t sweet. But it is informative, and it might possibly save your life one day. And if you pass on this information to your mother, your sister, your wife, your daughter, or any woman you hold near and dear to your heart, it can possibly save her life too.
My sister shared this information with me, and it had been passed on to her, and so on. I take no credit for this excellent, life saving advice and do not even know where the first message originated. I am only passing it on so that you can share it with people you know and love.
In daylight hours, remember and think about these things if you are ever in an emergency...

I just literally put on my thinking cap and it seems that I am getting some clarity on what I am supposed to be doing.
Up until a few months ago, I was trying to decide what I could do with the rest of my life and still have it be rewarding. Oh, not just anything, I wanted my venture to mean something.
While surfing the web one day, I came across the VAF forums and haven't looked back. Everything about the industry seemed to be speaking to me "This is what you want to do. This is what you have been looking for." I wanted to offer a service to business owners that could really benefit them in a big way.
Now, what can I do with my medical background? I asked. I can chart, do EKGs, Vital Signs, CLIA waived medical...

As far as I could recall, most Filipinos envisioned that the way to get out of poverty is if you go to school, study hard, graduate from college, get enough experience and work your way up to get a better job. Some made it, some didn't. Sad to say, greater majority is still in the RAT RACE and most are still trying to figure out what to do. When you look around people talk about how hard life is. How Government failed to alleviate the living condition of its constituents. How difficult it is to earn a living. How enticing it is to leave your family in order to work in another country. Sounds familiar? Point is, before you blame anyone of your living condition ask yourself first have you done enough?

My Life as a Part-Time Virtual Assistant
Being a full-time virtual assistant (VA) is probably more fulfilling than being a part-time virtual assistant. I can only imagine the things that I could do with more time. I started my virtual assistant business part-time because I have to maintain my current salary in order to support my family. However, being part-time keeps my business from growing in many ways.
The difference between being a full-time virtual assistant vs. a part-time virtual assistant means that I would be able to focus more time on the following tasks:
More traditional advertising and networking - With a small to non-existent budget, I do a lot of advertising myself. A...

In the past few months since discovering the Virtual Assistant Forum and dedicating myself to building a successful VA practice I have taken the leap into the world of social media to learn as much as I can.
Oh, I am familiar with social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, on a “personal” level to connect and with family and friends. The challenging step for me was learning to utilize and navigate Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media as social forums on a “business level”.
Well, there’s nothing like “baptism by fire”, so I started out by creating by business Twitter account (@CustomVA). I followed fellow VAs from VAF, as well as others I was familiar with, I read their tweets, checked out...

My team and I have decided to put together a book of anecdotes, stories, poems, and tips submitted by VAs all over the world.
I would like to invite any VA to sign up to receive information about the project. This is a unique opportunity to become a published author and make a name for yourself in this industry.
Once you review the initial information about the project and decide that you want to join you can submit writings about things such as: funny client stories, worst client stories, motivational words of wisdom, cute or funny poems about our industry, helpful lists for newbie VAs, etc.
You can find out more by going to http://www.deannava.com/vabook/.
I hope to see you involved...

I have been working as a Virtual Assistant for quite some time now and was quite content chugging along in my day to day tasks. About 3 months ago, I finally decided to start actively marketing myself as a VA (up until then all of my clients had been referrals )
For years, I just felt that there was no time for me to get out there and market myself when I was so busy marketing my clients. I was also a bit afraid of getting more clients. I wasn't sure if I could handle the work load, I didn't want to return to a 50 hour work week, etc.
Once I committed to a plan, I realized how much I had been missing by not putting myself out there.
As a result of my efforts, I have met some really great...

I've thought about becoming a virtual assistant for a couple of years.
Admittedly, it's usually when money is tight and I'm trying to think of a way to get more in. Not the best time to try to get a new business off the ground! Right now though, I'm really stopping and thinking. And Working on it! It's definitely not a get-rich-quick scheme. However, it IS something that I really want to do, so it's worth the time and effort that it will take.
Thinking over skills that are salable is both heartening and exciting - whoever thought that scanning in documents would be in demand? Yet, if there's someone out there who doesn't have time - that's a client! Woot!
The idea that I have control over what I want...

There have been challenges along the way. Give it up? No! Not for a day. Come along with me and you will see, Why I love being a Virtual Assistant every step of the way.
- I'm working in my pajamas. Don't you say?
- Learning and Growing every day.
- This one is a challenge. I'm lost, what do I do? Virtual Assistant Forums gives me the 'how to'.
- My work is so varied. Bored - never may!

Last week I urgently needed to get my hair styled in order to attend an event. My regular hair stylist was unavailable and because of a tight schedule, my backup stylist was unable to accommodate my request. I was in a turmoil and could not decide what to do with my hair. I finally opted to buy a wig. Off I went to the shops, with my sister, in search of the wig. We visited a few shops and could not find anything suitable.
As we walked along the street I noticed a walk-in salon where wigs were on display, and decided to look at them. I entered the salon and was warmly greeted by the Assistant. She retrieved the wig which had caught my attention and invited me to sit in the chair facing the mirror. She then fitted the wig, brushed...

“Why is that man sitting there?”
The elderly gentleman had entered the pediatric dentist office wearing a red coat and winter hat, each emblazoned with a white “W”. The staff knew him. “Hi, Dave,” the receptionist had said. “I hope next time you are wearing your baseball cap!”
He struck up a conversation with a dad waiting for his little girl. The dad happily discussed the Minnesota Twins with him. Dave was friendly, affable, and obviously at ease in the waiting room of a pediatric dentist. He seemed familiar to me, but I did not know him. I was the stranger there, having driven to this specialist from my own community.
After my daughter...

I love WordPress, for oh so many reasons! It appeals to my inner techie as well as a creative outlet for me. Perhaps the greatest thing about WordPress is the flexibility it offers to build, update, and add on features with plugins.
Using WordPress to build my own website served as the catalyst that led me down the path of adding WordPress blog and website design to my service offerings. Once a blog/website is complete, you should have all the control you need to edit the pages, blog posts, and sidebar items of your site through WordPress!
If you don’t have the time or the desire for maintaining or editing your website while running your business, I can also maintain your WordPress site for you! Whether you are...

Bridie’s Typing Services was created around 1992.
I’d helped a few friends with their CVs and other bits and bobs and decided to start a little business for myself. A few local postcards in shop windows were as far as my advertising budget would stretch and, needless to say, it didn’t exactly take off!
Fast forward 10 years. I was working fulltime at a local travel-based company when a broken ankle just two days after I was married led to extended time off work. When I returned it all seemed too much so I handed in my notice and, for the first time in my life, was unemployed. By chance a friend of mine mentioned she took on work from a local transcription agency and so - remembering how much I’d always...

Once I reached the point where I felt that I had enough of the corporate world, I excitedly began putting my thoughts together on establishing my business as a Virtual Assistant.
I would finally achieve the work-life balance I desired...the taste of freedom was sweet. I could now work from home and have the flexibility to do the things I really loved.
My vision was to surpass my clients expectations with administrative solutions that would free their time; so that they too, could attain their desired work-life balance.
As time went by, my dilema became clear --
Could I achieve the work-life balance I desired? What are my working hours? What about my exercise routines? When will be my...

Some of you may know that I have been working on my business for over the past 2 years. Now quite a bit of that was going back to school, at the age of 50, and taking the Virtual Assistant Program at Red Deer College.
My background is 5 years as Office Manager/Mortgage Cooridinator for a brokerage firm in Vancouver, and 7 years as Assistant to the President at a brokerage firm in Toronto. Both involved very diverse support.
Then for the next 15 years I have been a stay at home mom to be there for our son, both for school and other activities. I cleaned houses, my own business, and then worked for Wal-Mart at night stocking shelves for two years. One night I had an issue with our supervisor (one of many) and left...

It’s a good feeling to be able to call the shots once in a while. There are so many things in this life that we cannot control, even if we really wanted to. For many years I felt so helpless as if I had no control over my own life. Of course, it’s not like I have control over everything now, I mean who does? Isn’t control just an illusion that we tell ourselves to make us feel better- or is it?
I’m not saying that we cannot do things to shape our future; as a matter of fact I’m really saying quite the opposite. We really do have some control over things and the things that we do today will decide what happens tomorrow. The fact is we are given choices each and every day of our lives to make and if we make them well, then we...

Are you Super Mom? I know I’m not. In fact at times I can be downright cranky and irritated. The fact that my laundry is piling up, or the kids left that blasted toy out in the middle of the hallway again and I of course tripped over it in the middle of the night when all the lights where off. Or I have had a long day working on a BIG project and possibly up most of the night the night before because that BIG project had a LOOMING deadline and now it’s time to fix dinner and start the evening routine with the kids and wouldn’t you know it I’m out of milk and… well geeze Louise who’s going to go to the store and pick up milk when dinner is still on the stove and guess what I’m a single mom. Okay, well I do have a teen driver in the house now...

What defines excellence? In our personal and professional life we seek to excel. We say to our customers that we are here to exceed their expectations, and to me that is what excellence is about.
It is that defining attitude towards accomplishing our tasks, assignments and goals. It is about the quality of our service, the level of our professionalism, our code of ethics, our attention to detail, our speech and (n)etiquette, the way we dignify others, the power of our presence (physical and cyber) and even the way we make our exit -when we need to.
It is
..........an Attitude.

it's not that bad.
I contract with businesses locally, and have been for over 10 years. I admit I had not wanted to do this type of thing once I officially became a virtual assistant. However, two months ago a former business contact asked if I would fill in for his assistant while she was recovering from minor surgery, which was to be for about two weeks.
