How High is Your Virtual Balance Beam?

Posted 09-23-2010 at 07:37 AM by Off~Site Secretary
The balance beam is a very plain looking gymnastic apparatus. Itís a 16-foot long (500 cm) chunk of leather-wrapped wood elevated to 4.10 feet (125 cm) with a mere 4 inches (10 cm) of width. When a skilled gymnast takes control of this piece of equipment and combines her own skill and imagination into a routine of jumps, leaps, turns and a final artistic dismount, it is as if the gymnast infuses life and energy into the beam and into anyone who witnesses the routine.

As business owners, we have a virtual balance beam. We can take control of it and execute a routine to give a boost of energy to our clients. There is a long list of virtual assistant skills that each of us has chosen from to build our own business routines. Some virtual assistants are skilled at bookkeeping; others have special graphic artist skills; yet others are gifted website builders. It is exciting to know that we can all have successful businesses because the list of skills required for client needs is long. There is something on that list for each of us to pick from and develop a great routine.

When a gymnast crafts her routine, she picks only a few skills from her list and has 90 seconds to string them together. She refines those skills by practicing. In the beginning, she may practice on a line drawn on the floor and when comfortable she moves up to a ďshortyĒ beam that is elevated to only a few inches. By practicing her skills on the low level beam, she is building confidence to take her routine to a higher level.

However, if the gymnast stayed at the practice level, she would not be able to execute an important part of her routine. Her dismount! The last thing seen in the routine is often the most remembered. Her routine would be incomplete and ineffective if she did not punctuate her performance with an exciting dismount. She would not be able to move on to the next apparatus.

How high is your virtual balance beam? Are you still building confidence in your skills and practicing your routine? Maybe it is time to take your routine to that higher level. Provide your client with a solid service infused with energy. Raise your beam to the full 4.10-foot height and show off your dismount! Give that exclamation point to your clients and they will be sure to remember YOU!

Again, another great analogy story. This is what I am working on now. Making sure my prospective clients remember me. Thank you for putting it into terms that I can understand.
