The Day I Lost My Special Powers

Posted 07-26-2010 at 06:39 PM by Off~Site Secretary
Almost always, I have special powers. Recently, my husband called me and said a large black cloud dropped an invisible kryptonite blanket on our house. He did not use those exact words, but I understood the gravity of the situation. My powers would be rendered useless.

I knew that I would not be able to wave my black rectangular wand to cause pictures to magically appear or to wave my white rectangular wand to make cool air magically blow into the room. Oh, I have lost powers before. I once had a special power that made many pains disappear with a simple kiss.

I paused to consider Off~Site Secretary’s Contingency Plan. If I had any pressing deadlines or business concerns to attend to, we would be able to meet them without missing a beat. Our handy, dandy generator could be called into service to ward off any loss of power. It was a feeling of relief knowing that my family was safe and my business was safe.

After my husband and daughter went to check on the neighbors, a UPS truck pulled into the driveway. The driver was oblivious to our plight as he cheerfully handed me a package. I hung the cute outfits with matching doll outfits on the closet door and went off to forage for supper.

I returned carrying magic food bags decorated with bells and found an amazed daughter with wonder in her eyes. How was I able to produce these fabulous outfits so magically? After all, she had only been gone for a little walk! I basked in the glow of this wondrous power in the midst of our darkness.

When night fell, I was reminded of another special power. Almost always I have the power in the middle of the night to open my eyes and immediately know the exact time – to the minute. I thought of my daughter without her nightlight in the next room. Suddenly, a light bulb went off (in my head, not in the room).

“The dolphins,” I gleefully mumbled. My husband replied, “Batteries are in the closet.” When I proudly brought in the pretty plastic dolphin sculpture softly glowing from green to red to blue, my daughter’s eyes lit up brightly with relief. “Thanks, Mom.” Those were her actual words, but I knew what she really meant. “Mom, you have the best special powers ever!”

So back to bed I went, basking in my daughter’s admiration for the second time in one evening. It was very special indeed. A few hours later I awoke to some beeps and humming. It was like a symphony to my ears. I shook my husband awake and full of excitement in my soul was able to get out the words, “Power’s back on.”
