Catch 22
Posted 05-29-2009 at 01:38 PM by NikAssist
I have a great business idea. I have the drive, the ability, the knowledge, the experience. I even know all the ways to promote myself to gain the most exposure...I have the ability to really get my business off the ground...BUT..I can't
As long as I am working full time for my company, I am limited into how much I can put myself out there, I am limited by how much information I can expose about myself, I am limited by who can know about my business....AND...on the other side, my job has a large pool of potential clients to draw from! My job is the one place that could benefit the most from my services, but my job is keeping me from making the most out of my company.
The catch 22, is that as long as they are paying me and others in my same position, as soon as my business is off the ground, there is a great chance of all the reps dropping, well, me and my other co-workers to solely use my service as needed and save a bunch of money out of their own pockets.
So, I sit, with this amazing business pan in my pocket, just waiting for the day when I can pull it out and say HEY WORLD! Look what I can do for you!!
I have to work quietly for now, and hope that either my business jumps off the ground and I can quit my job or that I can quietly grow my business without my company finding out and in time, be able to do the same and have my dream of working from home doing what I love. I'm just not in a position to go for it and have it come back and bite me. It's such a great idea, I know it could be successful..wonder if all companies began this way starting out..I mean an idea has to come from somewhere right? I'm not the first person in the world to be in this situation...surely I'm not that special
I know that things will fall into place though, I'm certain that because my will is so strong, there will be a way!!

Sounds so familiar!Hi there - I am sure that this post will seem all too familiar for some of those who still have a foot in the corporate door! Small-time VAs social group was set up for people in the same situation.
Just in terms of some encouragement: I too was in that boat for a while... sat on the fence, wondering 'when' it should happen. Then I decided that if I did nothing, nothing would surely happen. And so I started small, just like you can (if you want of course). It can be a juggle - but what isn't? I do advertise what I do widely BUT I have exactly the same luxury you do - the ability right now to be selective. Who can you give the biggest bang for their buck? Who can you make most happy? Which relationships are going to bring you the most fruitful long term rewards? Is there a particular market you want to get experience in as a VA that you can solely concentrate on right now to develop your expertise? There's absolutely nothing wrong with undertaking one job at a time until you're ready to cope with a bigger workload... and that's when you can start looking at part time employment etc if you're still unsure about taking that foot out of the corporate door. I encourage you to follow your passion, even if you follow it slowly to start with. Every day you wait is another day "you didn't". It's nice for clients to know that not only are they your number 1 priority but they are your only priority. Exclusivity can be flattering! Afterall, it's not about quantity - it's about quality. |
