Perservance and Your Dream Will Get You Where You Want To Go

Posted 04-19-2011 at 09:54 AM by Nancy's Virtual Office
Some of you may know that I have been working on my business for over the past 2 years. Now quite a bit of that was going back to school, at the age of 50, and taking the Virtual Assistant Program at Red Deer College.

My background is 5 years as Office Manager/Mortgage Cooridinator for a brokerage firm in Vancouver, and 7 years as Assistant to the President at a brokerage firm in Toronto. Both involved very diverse support.

Then for the next 15 years I have been a stay at home mom to be there for our son, both for school and other activities. I cleaned houses, my own business, and then worked for Wal-Mart at night stocking shelves for two years. One night I had an issue with our supervisor (one of many) and left at 2:00 in the morning to walk 45 KM home and believe me I had a lot of time to think.

I arrived at the EI office the next day and discovered the Virtual Assistant Program and I have not looked back since. I knew right away that this was meant for me.

Now I applied for a student loan to go back to school and on the morning I was to start I found out they were only giving me $300 my semester was $1100 plus books. My husband, who supports 1me 50%, says lets go to the bank and we refinanced the house and I walked out in one hour with my tuition, books, and programs, paid for. We also bought a desktop computer, as we only had a laptop, which we also just bought.

I am set up now, but you have to understand I have not worked on a computer for over 15 years, so it was quite a challenge and quite hilarious sometimes what happend when I was on the computer. All is good now.

School went excellent, and although open if anyone was looking for my support I was not actively looking for work. Again the support of my husband as I was not working during this as it was a full time load for school. We had to sacrifice other things as there was only his income, but thank goodness we do not have a high debt load.

During my practicum, I would with Diana Ennen, and although I had already known there was another Nancy's Virtual Office, she showed me why it was important that I changed my name so that it was unique. So I had to go through a whole new image change, including name, tag line, and logo.

I was already to launch my business and then I had a major surgery, in which the recovery was not great so that waylaid me for about a month and a half. Then we lost my niece, which was devastating. And right around Christmas, my computer crashed. Thank goodness I back up so once I had my hard drive replaced everything was okay.

Now comes the new year. I am stoked and ready to go. I have got all my social media, my website, my blog. I am writing articles and having them published. Sent out my press release and everything. I was doing everything that I was learning and still I was getting nothing.

I am focused to my target market, and very focused on my ideal client. I could have worked under a Multi-Va company, which is a great option to go if that is want you want. This is not what I wanted. I want 1 - 3 clients providing them full support. That means even if I cannot do what they need to be done I know who can do it. My client is someone who only wants to deal with one person.

I must admit that I am very discourged now. I was going to start looking for alternative work here in Alix, which is slim. Then I happened to get a hold of someone from the past who happens to be creating a new business and voila here I am working almost half of my target hours with one client, doing everything from database management to website design, and everything in between. As well as working with Keith very part time on his mortgage business. So if I get one more client I am set. Now how cool is that.

Again some of you may have heard this story in the brag section, but I really wanted to reiterate to everyone starting out that if you really know this is where you want to be you have to overcome all the obstacles, surround yourself with people who support you in your dreams, no naysayers allowed, and just keep talking to everyone that you know.

I am proof that perservance works when you know your dream.

Thank you for listening and I hope you find encouragement in these words.

Nancy, it seems to have been a long journey for you and it is so great that your business is now on "go." I too am a Central Alberta girl and am just entering into my Practicum for the VA program at RDC.

Your story is very encouraging. All the best!
