A Journey to Becoming a Virtual Assistant

With a blog you should be writing about things you know about and be able to offer great information to your target market.
As I have just started my business, I do not have much content so far. I thought I would write about my journey to where I am now.
My background is 12 years in the mortgage brokerage business. I have been out of the work force for almost 16 years, being a stay at home mom. Our son is grown and I now have the opportunity to go back and do what I love and do it on my terms.
I have not had a computer in my home for 16 years, but when I worked in Toronto, we were at that time quite computer savvy. When I left there the internet was just coming in, there were no emails, you could not go in and out of programmes like you can now, there was document formatting but nothing like we have today. I could go on about the differences between now and then.
In November 2008, I came across information on the Virtual Assistant Programme at Red Deer College that was offered on line. I knew right away that this was for me. I applied for a student loan, and on the morning I was to start my classes I found out I was only receiving $300 and my semester was $1200 plus books. I was completely downhearted. My husband believes in me so much we went to the bank, refinanced the house, and paid for all my courses, new computer and other things I needed. Now I was ready. Hah!!
As I stated I have not had a computer for 16 years, and my first few classes were quite hilarious. I ended up being logged into one class 3 times. I remember the first time I searched for something and I got over 25 million hits, it was just baffling. Even when taking communication skills I found out all the ways I was taught to write letters was changed. So a great big learning curve for me all around.
It is a year and half later, I have graduated from the programme this past June and I cannot believe how much I have learned and grown.
I have my company name, image, web site (which I created from scratch), marketing materials, target market, blog (although still in the works), newsletter, and more. I am posting blogs, submitting articles and tips, and getting to know my target market.
Forums like this one give great support and allows me to come outside my comfort zone. Education has definitely been a major contributing factor to my confidence, and the fact that this is what I know I am destined to be.
I believe we choose the Virtual Assistant profession because we love the work, love the fact that we are always learning, and that we can laugh at what seemed so hard a few months ago now comes with ease. We are also a profession who loves to support other people to grow and be everything they want to be.
I have just finished on leg of my journey, which is establishing, getting comfortable and confident, and focusing on where I want to go with my business. Now with my first client, Woo Yoo!!, and the want to make this a success, I am heading out on the next step and acquiring my clients.
Thank you for listening to me. I hope in the future my blogs will be full of great information for everyone, but even if you got a chuckle, or maybe learned that if this is what you want you will not let obstacles stand in your way, then I am glad I wrote it.
Good luck to everyone starting your business. It is a great place to be.

Thank you for sharing your journey into the virtual assistant industry. I'd say you made it successfully!
What was nice to know is how supportive your husband had been and I believe without support, being self-employed can be a struggle...especially since it can take time to establish oneself. Thank you, Nancy. Janine |
