I’m Being Outwitted by the Christmas Mouse

Let me begin by giving you a little history of my story. Several months ago my family moved to a new home in rural location with 21+ acres and a 100-year old farm house. Or as we like to say our new “old” house. We moved in late summer so critters were not our problem, well inside anyway. I’ve got used to the bats, great for the insect population and even bought them their own house. But that is another story.

First thing we did when fall arrived was check the attic for adequate insulation. I was too chicken to go into the attic not knowing what has been up there for 100 years so I gladly sent my husband and son in my place. When my son came back down he announced, “There are some mice skeletons up there and I think some live ones too”. Goody! But I look at it this way, as long as they are in the attic and not in my personal space, more power to them.

Now winter is approaching and the weather is getting colder so I guess my guests are starting to get hungry. I am now starting to notice that they are coming into my kitchen on one of my countertops. Okay now there lays the problem; they are in my personal space. My husband kindly reminds me everyone has mice and we had a few stow-aways at our house in the city. What did I expect moving to the country? It was then that I gently informed him, but they are in my personal space and they even had the audacity to eat my Amish butter, a big no-no here.

If you are a mouse lover you may want to stop here! I laid out glue boards because I don’t want to be losing fingers with the old time traps. I must have had ten traps strategically placed on my counter but those dang things were still working their way around them. So as my son and I were sitting in the family room (adjoining the kitchen) we heard the brazen little friend on the counter. We of course jump up and my son notices they are not coming up the wall but down. Of course now my son is fascinated at the route they are taking. So I reconfigure my traps. One, two, three – here I go I am on a roll.

But now I have one, which is affectionately known as our Christmas mouse, who continues to outsmart me and my penchant for my new counter décor. So I move to Plan B, then Plan C and even Plan D. No luck, argh! I’ve considered a cat but due to allergies of my son that would open a whole new can of worms. I do have Rocco the dog, who even though is a hunter and retriever, just watches the counter in fascination. I guess he figures if they leave his food alone no harm no foul. So now I am off to formulate Plan E.

Maybe I should just let him enjoy his holiday too, unless of course he goes after my Amish butter.

I'm so curious now about the 'Amish butter' - I can imagine what it is and where it comes from (and that it must be amazing) but would love to hear more...

Sounds like that little mouse has sophisticated tastes

Amish butter is butter that is made in the Amish community (a community that shuns modern technologies such as electricty and for some, machinery such as cars). The butter is churned from cream that comes from hand-milked cows. They use no preservatives and it is all organic. So much better than store bought butter any day.

Amish butter is found in a lot of rural communities or of coarse Amish communities.

I'm familiar with the 'concept' of Amish life but it never crossed my mind that their products would be available for sale - but of course that makes sense! We buy organic always, but that sounds like a whole new level of healthy and pure - I have no doubt it must be absolutely delicious.

During growing season I get many items from the Amish, can't get more organic than that. I especially love strawberry and peach season. Fortunately we live in an area where there are quite a bit of Amish farms so there are many to choose from. Interesting concept though is they set their prices at the beginning of the season and all are the same no matter where you go and they are very reasonable.

My brother lives in Lancaster County, PA and is the in the heart of Amish land. We love visiting there and my girls are so intrigued on their way of life. Their furniture is absolutely beautiful as well.
