The Rewards of Spring Cleaning

Did you ever notice that spring cleaning doesn’t just result in a sparkling home, but it clears your mind! Suddenly you can finish scrapbooking, complete projects or start others that you put off because you felt overwhelmed.
Whenever I think of spring cleaning I don’t just think about how my space will look, but I also think about how great I’ll feel afterwards. I make a list of each room and what I’ll need, gather my supplies, press the curtains, shake out and wash the rugs, and then I’m off to the races. I put on my favorite music, grab the feather duster, and I’m off. It’s time to get into the corners.
When I imagine spring cleaning (originally living in Long Island, NY), I think of opening every window in the house, closed for months keeping out old man winter. I can hardly wait to feel the breeze flow through the kitchen window, cross the dining room and float right out the living room window, taking with it my cabin fever. I take a nice deep breath and I feel better right away.
The curtains are hung, the crystal is sparkling, the mattresses have been flipped, and the white linens have been starched. As the sun casts a glare against the freshly mopped hardwood floors, that’s my sign . . . I am finished. My favorite freshly cut flowers are slipped in the crystal vase and set on the fresh linen tablecloth, while the curtains blow in the nice, cool breeze. Straightening a pillow here and adjusting a knick-knack there, I walk from room to room admiring my hard work.
Finally, with a glass of ice cold lemonade, I plop down up in my favorite chair and put my feet up. As I look out the gleaming living room window, with recently removed evidence of little noses pressed against it, I notice that the freshly mowed lawn is a beautiful shade of green. The magnolia tree is in bloom and the neighborhood children have surrounded the ice cream truck.
I sit there for a while, relaxing. As the stale air of winter has blown out, it is replaced by a sense of calm and peace that rests on me and in my house.
I think to myself . . . Welcome, Spring. I’ve been waiting for you.

Sometimes I think the best part of spring cleaning is the sense of accomplishment afterwards!
The one thing I didn't do this year after my cleaning spree was complete was fill a vase with fresh flowers - thanks for the reminder I'm going to bring some home today! |

I didn't think it was possible since I don't really like housework but you have inspired me to clean. I think I got burned out when I was a kid at home. Anyway, I read your post and walked across my dull hardwood floors and looked out my dirty windows and said to myself, "it's time!" I want to feel that feeling of a job well done and see a sparkling clean house. Thank you!
