Savvy Subcontracting: Journal 006

Posted 10-08-2011 at 11:44 PM by hbplifestyle
Tomorrow I turn the big "40". Can't say as though I'm looking forward to it however I do know I will soon be turning it into the new "20."

The other night I was priviledged enough to attend an event with Kinza a motivational speaker. I really believe it's what I need to help me start this next decade of my life. She told us to take things that are on our someday list and start doing them. We need to visualize, plan and do it. Well I share my vision with you tonight.

A year from now I want to be a work at home mom that has the flexibility to attend my kids events, run out supper to my husband in the field and just plain enjoy life as it comes. I don't want to be frantically hopping from one...

Savvy Subcontracting: Journal 003

Posted 09-23-2011 at 05:35 PM by hbplifestyle
This morning I was up early on a call with my contractor. It's been a long day but what I wanted to share with other subcontractors is how important routine is when starting.

I wish someone would have encouraged me to establish a good routine. It helps discipline yourself, focus, have more time for the family and make goals. This client is teaching me in small steps but its working. So get out your calendars and start small by scheduling responding to emails. It's a start in the right direction.

Savvy Subcontracting: Journal 002

Posted 09-22-2011 at 01:25 PM by hbplifestyle
It's been a long morning already. I had my weekly call with my current contractor. The one thing I wish someone had told me when I first started is this whole virtual business is part of the growing is getting thicker skin.

Over the last six months my contractor has done just that. Given me thick skin, in a good way of course.

We've really started to communicate and he tells me what bothers him about my work or what needs improvement. Before this I would have taken offense to it. Now I take it and run with it. It's the best way to learn.

Savvy Subcontracting: Journal 001

Posted 09-21-2011 at 01:01 PM by hbplifestyle
After listening to many other successful VAs' inspirational podcasts I thought this site would be appropriate for these blog posts.
As a virtual subcontractor I want to share my daily thoughts, frustrations and achievements with everyone. It's important that we know that each of us are just ordinary people trying to become successful in the virtual world.
Today as I came up with this idea I was listening to a podcast which is what inspires me. Nicole Dean is the host and she shares others stories of their trials and error. This is what I want to do for other subcontractors. Some day I too will be very successful. Some of the goals I have for myself are:

1. Recurring income with affiliate marketing
2. Make a...

Posted 09-17-2010 at 11:17 AM by hbplifestyle
Here's a summary of the questions asked of Pam Ivey, owning a multi-VA firm.

    • Do you currently have subcontractors you work with? When you chose the services you subcontract what was the reason behind it? Ex., There’s not enough time, wasn’t something you cared to do, want an expert in that area?
    • Is it necessary to get some kind of education or certification in an area a sub wants to offer services in?
    • Do you think there are services that are in demand that subcontractors should offer? Why is that?
    • Let’s go back to question 3 and talk about the top 3 in demand services. Can you tell us what’s all involved with offering those types of services?
    • Do you have a procedure manual that subs follow when providing some of

Subcontractors, Have You Considered A Staffing Agency?

Posted 07-03-2010 at 12:37 AM by hbplifestyle
Updated 07-03-2010 at 12:42 AM by hbplifestyle (Wording)
Over the last three years of being a subcontractor I've often considered going through a staffing agency to find work. Because I'm a VA I've always thought going that route just wasn't an option. My understanding was that being a entrepreneur I needed to find my own clients.

One of the largest online staffing agencies, Team Double Click, has agreed to bring their director Janice Clark on as the advisor for the Subcontractors Q&A call. Janice owns BizMSolutions. She'll share her story about how she got started with TDC, help VAs understand what they can receive by using the staffing agency and some of the practices they use when bringing subcontractors on board.

Have you considered using a staffing angency but...

What Skills Do You Need to Succeed As a Virtual Assistant?

Posted 10-15-2009 at 11:51 PM by hbplifestyle
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mer...nberg]Meredith Eisenberg

The base skill that virtual assistants have is being a top-notch administrative expert. However, the online world is a different working environment that requires some specific online skills. Basics include knowing how e-commerce works (shopping carts, autoresponders, putting together virtual events, payment gateways), basics about websites or blogging, knowing how to find information online, etc.

Additional and more specialized skills would depend on your niche. Real estate virtual assistants need to know specialized programs for real estate agents. Virtual assistants who work with life coaches might need different skills including knowing...

Independent Contracting Online While Working Full Time

Posted 10-08-2009 at 09:23 PM by hbplifestyle
Author: Melissa Brewer

With the costs of living increasing, the economy shifting downward, and salaries simply still no enough to make both ends meet, it is no wonder that people are continuously looking for other means of paying for the day to day expenses. One of the alternatives that people turn to when they need extra cash is contract work - especially when they have the skills that are sought after in creative and technical industries.

Unlike other part time jobs, contract work allows you to do the work that you have already been doing, without forcing you to commute twice as much or juggle hours and schedules. This means that while you are working on the side, you are able to still practice the things that...

Tips for success as a subcontractor

Posted 09-29-2009 at 12:16 AM by hbplifestyle
by Meredith Little
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-1031201.html

Takeaway: Subcontractors are often in a dubious position: They're not quite independent, yet they aren't employees, either. How can you make subcontracting work for you? Here's some advice from an expert.

Independent contactors who subcontract find themselves in an ambiguous situation: They stop being completely independent, but they aren’t quite employees. If you, as an independent contractor, decide to subcontract, you probably won’t have as much freedom to do your work when and how you want. It’s also likely that you’ll need to budget extra time into your work for another layer of approval.

In this...

To Much Work and not Enough Workers? Here are 7 Alternatives to Hiring

Posted 09-21-2009 at 10:41 PM by hbplifestyle
There comes a time in many small businesses when a decision has to be made whether or not to hire employees.

Maybe you've reached the point where you need to grow, but you're not sure you're ready to bring on more people. Or maybe you want to stay small and lean, and don't want the bother of having employees. Or maybe it's just been a bad year (totally understandable in this economy!) and cash flow is crunched.

Whatever the reason, there's still work to be done. And today there are more ways than ever to get the work you need taken care of without hiring. Where you turn depends on what type of business you have, and your particular needs.

Here are a few suggestions on where you can get the workers...

A Peace of Mind

Posted 08-11-2009 at 08:43 PM by hbplifestyle
For two years now I've been a virtual assistant and couldn't put my finger on the reason I wanted this so bad. After talking to a sister, going through the empty nest stage, it hit me. It's truly a sense of accomplishment that I will always be able to do more and a means to bring to peace to my life. I enjoy that I'm able to talk with other VA who share so much of the same interest that I do as well. The best part about it is I was able to figure out that I need another avenue in my life other than just my children. Don't get me wrong, they mean everything, but they will grow up.

So ask yourself. Do you get a peace of mind or is it work?

Give Projects To An Expert

Posted 06-07-2009 at 12:51 AM by hbplifestyle
Updated 06-07-2009 at 12:53 AM by hbplifestyle (Wording)
I'd like to share with other VAs something that just happened to me and will happen to them at one time or another. Recently I decided to get my on blog and host. After that I was going to create and maintain the blog. On this blog I have podcasts I want to post. Needless to say I've never worked much with audio posting. It took me two weeks to trying getting it on my blog. Finally enough was enough and I just said I've learned what I can but I pulled in a fellow VA that is an expert with Wordpress. And Woo La she had the audio I gave her posted within 48 hours. A big thanks to her.

Learn from me and just hire an expert, don't waste valueable VA time

How I Became A Virtual Subcontractor

Posted 05-23-2009 at 11:49 PM by hbplifestyle
Updated 05-24-2009 at 03:41 PM by VAF Admin (Title Edit)
As a graduate of the CVP program. Virtual Dream OfficeServices became my business name. Living on a farm in Wisconsin, I never thought there would be chance to supplement my income and do it while at home. Having two small kids and working full-time there was no way for me to have a second job outside the home.

While going back to school for my associate degree in accounting, I did a research project on telecommuniting. Then, I got pregnant with my first child. While on maternity I researched more about working from home. At that time there were very few companies that hired employees this way and very few people did it as their very own business. I was too conservative to quit my job since I carry the health insurance for the...
