Networking that works -- for you!

Networking can be scary for new business owners, but it really doesn't have to be. In fact, there are so many different opportunities out there that can suit you and your networking style.
There are the traditional networking groups where you go to a facility (usually a restaurant or conference room at a hotel) for an hour and network with other business owners in person. The opportunity to learn about other businesses in your area and exchange business cards is great.
Ok, so perhaps you have gone to a network group and just didn't feel comfortable. That is ok - give the meeting one more try and/or find another group. There are MANY networking groups out there. You can go to as many as you have time for (keep in mind some meetings are free, some are not). Find the types of meetings in which you feel the most comfortable. You may even want to look into joining your local Chamber of Commerce.
You can also network online - social media networking is really catching on. Many virtual assistants are finding clients online just by getting involved in groups on websites such as LinkedIn, FaceBook and even finding success using Twitter.
Still not satisfied? You can always start your own networking group using websites like Meetup.com. Building a networking group may take some time and dedication, but it certainly is an option for the business owner that is looking for a specific networking group and just can't seem to find what they are looking for.
Overall, the important thing to remember is that networking is important, but network in a way that works best for you; whether that be online, in person or somewhere in between.

This was a very thought provoking post Darlene. I go in phases where I am extremely shy and then will hit a stage where I'm quite outgoing and gregarious. I try to alternate my networking efforts to suit my current mood.
And VAs - don't forget, you can start a networking group right here via VAF too by scanning threads and/or starting your own in the Local Meetups section. Thanks for another great blog post Darlene! |

Darlene,
Great information. I use traditional face to face newtorking and also social networking and you touched on all the avenue that I use. And I agree that if it does not work best for you, then it does not work. |

I always thought of 'networking' as the traditional "get dressed up, sell yourself, but don't really enjoy it" way to promote yourself. It really has progressed - great for those of us who are not that comfortable attending large group gatherings.

'Networking' really has progressed, hasnt it? Now you can sit in the comfort of your home and actually network! How amazing is that.

As a Newbie, I've come to realize how important networking is - in fact, the crux of our success. I'm still learning and feeling a bit intimidated at how wide the scope and opportunities are to network, but your post noted them well and emphasized the importance of making it "fit" us so it's comfortable. Thanks, Darlene.

Networking is ever so important, I'm really glad you posted about it. Just tonight I went to a trade show that provided me with lots of information, more network events that would be even better suited to developing the VA business, and put me in touch with some genuinely lovely people. Online is fab too - such as here. Who knew you could network in your pj's ;-)

It seems like new websites are popping up everyday enabling people to to network. It gets hard trying to keep up with them all!
