Default As a writer, who is my blog audience?
I've recently changed my niche and I'm transitioning everything over to the new market. That being said, as a writer, my blog is VERY important but I'm having difficulty knowing who I'm writing to.
  1. Should my articles be to showcase what I know about writing and tips on how to do it?
  2. Can it also be creative and personal?
  3. Is it okay to combine my personal blog with my business blog (I've been tempted to do that)?
  4. Is my audience the entrepreneur that needs guidance with writing or is it the writer that needs assistance with writing?
Thanks again for your input and advice guys! My brain is in a fog for some reason.

I was always told to keep personal and business blogs separate. Some of your clients may be inadvertently offended by something on your personal blog. Maybe you wrote a post about the very best hamburger place you've ever eaten at, recommending that everyone who can should try it out. You also may have included a photo of yourself there with some friends, some of whom may have an alcoholic beverage at their place setting. Something that seems so innocent could easily become offensive, and it's best to avoid such possibilities as much as possible.

I've had the same temptation, but I have a separate site address for my personal blog and my business. I *may* place a link on my business site that would take someone to the 'about me' page on my blog, but they'd have to be hunting actively through my business site to find it, and it would *not* drop them into a blog post directly. I may also link to my business blog posts from my personal site, but that depends on the usefulness of the post.

That's just my $0.02!

Hey Caroline -

It's sooo key for YOU to know who your target market is, because none of us can or should try to identify that for you. However, we can help you find the answer for yourself. Some ways that you can identify your target audience is to determine who YOU like to work with. What type of industry, people, personalities, values, gender, etc. Determining this is just a place to start. As you begin to work with people, you will refine this.

As far as blogging - the purpose of blogging should always be to showcase your experience & expertise. It must be a strategic part of your marketing strategy. But it must also add value to the reader. However, remember you are marketing YOU as well. So, while I totally agree with Luke...occasionally throwing in some little snippet about you can be a good thing. For instance, you could do something like. "As a copywriter, it just seems to be that every typo, every grammar error, on a website jumps write off the screen at me. Last weekend, while I was up skiing in Vail, I was looking at the hotel's electronic marquis and I couldn't believe what I saw!" Then proceed to tell them what it was, and then offer them tips and educate your audience how they need to avoid the same mistakes.

Just a couple ideas to hopefully help get you started.
