I am in the middle of putting together a Wordpress.org site/blog. Your information has been most helpful and just knowing there is someone I can ask questions to! Are there good tutorials, books, etc. out there that you would recommend to help us through a tough spot?

One question in particular...I want my url only to show in the address area. karenseltrecht.com not karenseltrecht.com/blog. Where do I refigure?

Thanks!!!!
Karen

Hello Ladies,

I am seriously considering changing webhosts and servers and using the 1 click install of Wordpress to rebuild my website. Question, I know that if you would like to buid a website it is best to go with Wordpress.org, but once I upload the software, will my domain name look the same for example, currently it is www.excelvirtualservices.com, will I be able to mainting this if I use Wordpress to build the site and using a webhost?

Ivette,

When you purchased your domain name, you most likely set the DNS (domain name servers) to point to your current web host. If you change your host, you will simply go into your domain provider again and use the new DNS to point the domain to your new web host.

Hosting a Wordpress theme on your new host will not affect the domain name. All you would be changing is pointing the domain to another host. If you happen to have a WP theme on the new host, that is what will appear. Your old site will no longer be viewable because you are telling the domain where the new site is located.

Just a quick fyi...
I'm a photoshop gal. Not an SEO gal. When I first started blogging, i thought it would be great to add tons of graphics to a blog. Not a great idea. Real text is the way to go with blogging. Real text will only be identified by search engines. If you want a graphic site...fine...just make it your background...not your content.
Lesson learned...passing it on to you.

I found that my web host Yahoo restricted many of the plugins and widgets available for WordPress. I never thought much about it until I tried to schedule several posts over Thanksgiving. I wrote them, scheduled them for later and ... they dissapeared!

Christine tried to help me but couldn't. My son told me that Yahoo restricts a file called cron.php and that was the root of the problem. I switched hosts over this weekend and am now tidying up the loose ends.

Be ware that if you purchased your domain name from your host, they may opt to drop you if you drop them. Meaning, they may no longer notify you that your domain is up for renewal. Make sure to check into that so you can get your new host to take on that job.

Brianna,

Good to see a this WordPress thread. Have both wordpress.com and wordpress.org sites up. The wordpress.com was started until I had the time to attach the wordpress.org (hosted one) to my website--which was really easy. In any event, I post to both and they are connected to various other social media sites that I use.

Thanks for the info about which one is involved in search engine rankings. That's very helpful. Hopefully, I understood you correctly :-)

I'm going to keep plugging away with both of these sites. In due time, they will both have different topics. Right now, the same info is one both blogs, hoping that someone will see the info I post.

Hopefully, I can contribute something along the way.

Thanks again for doing this.
