Default What's the deal with Blog spam!
My blog has been on my site for 3 weeks. I have 3 posts on it. Since last week I have been getting inundated with spam from someone called "nipfinaway" who sells cheap viagara! He (I am assuming its a he with awful grammar) spams me everyday with 3-4 copies of the same thing.

As a rule I just delete spam since its my understanding that marking it as spam can actually increase the spam you get. However, the first time I got the first of his "comments" on my blog I marked them as spam before I moderated them out. Since then I have just deleted his comments immediately. But it doesn't stop him, he just keeps coming back!

As a new blogger, what's the deal with this. Does it just get worse as time goes on? Does anyone (Brianna) have any words of wisdom to make it stop.

Thank you!

Shari,
You might want to check in your blog set up for a place to make all comments moderated or add a security box (y'know the ones where you have to type in a word to get your comment submitted)

I feel for you.
Good Luck

Hi Christina,
My comments are set to moderate. Nobody can just leave a comment without approval first. It's just a pain in the you know what. But, I guess its just part and parcel of being on the net right? Do you get a lot of spam too?

Actually I don't get any, and never did on my, now-defunct, personal blog but blogger has the security feature available. Spammers don't usually bother with the blogs that have the security feature.

Thanks Christina. I'll look into the security feature!

Hi Shari,
Not sure what blog program you're using but I'm pretty sure Wordpress also has the captcha image feature available.
I never get any spam on my blog but we use a home-made blogging program with a tough captcha that no spambots can get through.
Blogger is notorious for blog spam, I've read.

Sorry you're dealing with this - what a pain!

It is Wordpress but its an older version. If I want the newer version I need to upgrade my hosting package from regular to business. I don't mind doing that but my hosting provider has suggested they will upgrade the Wordpress *at some point* so rather than spend money on hosting I don't really need right now, I think I'll wait it out. In the meantime, if "nipfinaway" wants to keep spamming me with cheap viagara promos then I'll just keep deleting him.

Hey Shari,

There may be some plugins for the older Wordpress version that will help cut down on spam. Let me do some research and I'll get back to you!

Hi Shari,

I downloaded a wordpress plugin that blocks spam. It's called Akismet. Which can be found here http://.codex.wordpress.org/Akismet

I love Akismet. No spam problems at all!

Another wordpress spam plugin that others swear by is call Spam Karma 2. Which can be found here http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/.

I tried Spam Karma 2, but did not like it because it was marking legitimate posts as spam. It blocks spam based on your requirements.

One of these plugins should help you.
