I'm reading up on backlinks. If finally hit me, are blogrolls really backlinks? If not, why have them on your blog?

A lot of blog experts will tell you that blogrolls are no longer the useful thing they once were. In fact in a recent blog help series; 31 Days to Kick Your Blog in the Butt by Grant Griffiths, he states that it's much smarter to use 'organic' links. Organic linking is simply linking to other sites within the content of your blog posts. He states that Google & the other search engines don't treat blogroll links the same way as they used to and all a blogroll is really accomplishing is taking up blog real estate that you could be using for something else.
I always hated blogrolls for the simple reason that you always had people wondering why they hadn't made your blog roll. Usually it was simply lack of time to add them!

Am I getting trackbacks mixed up? Can you trackback within a comment on someone else's blog? What I want is to try bringing traffic from someone else's site to mine because we have similar purposes. I guess I need to go to a Trackback class 101, LOL.

A trackback is a way to let other blog owners know when you mention their post on your own blog. Each blog post you read that is 'trackbackable' should have a specific trackback url to use as your link, that automatically 'pings' the blog you're talking about, letting that blog owner know you've linked to them.

Normally, your trackback will appear under the post, much like comments, and readers will be able to click and visit your blog to see what you've said about that particular post. So in that sense it can bring traffic from someone else's blog to yours.
