Default Updating a WordPress Page
Hi Everyone!

I am getting ready update my WordPress site, which is also my website. I am using a template, and it is self-hosted. I am trying to figure out how I can update pages, including (or especially) my index page behind the scenes before I publish to the world.

How is this done in WordPress? Been through the Codex, etc. and can't seem to find the info I need.

Thanks much for any insight!
Pam

Hi Pam,
For the index page, what I've done in the past is to create a new page that will serve as a temporary landing page, it can be identical to your current one or it can be something that states your site is getting a facelift. Once you've created the page, go into the Settings menu and in the Reading section you can choose to make that new page your 'front page'. Once you're ready with your new index page you can just change it back and delete the temporary page.

Ummm...this sounds vaguely familiar. LOL... Have you told me this before and my senoritis has struck again?

Now that you say this...I do remember. So, I think this might be the same question I may have had before. Even if that is my new landing page...as I'm working on the other one, should someone decide to click on that tab they will still see the work in progress...correct?

My memory is returning...

LOL, yes, but while you're working on the page you can remove it from the navigation (you're using Headway right?) That way visitors won't see it in the navigation.

Hey, we VA's have so much info in the brain, we just need a little nudge now and then.

Amen to that! Yes...using Headway. How do I remove it from the navigation? I went to the Navigation area on the side panel and that was the only place I saw anything. I clicked on Hide Navigation Home Link and now I can't get my index page back. I'd already copied all the code and content...so no biggie...but I obviously still get messed up by Headway.

You may need to know what I did in Settings > Reading as well. I called the New landing page "new home". I had the "blog" page selected in the "posts page" but that was causing the Index page content to show up on my blog page. So I reset that to just "select."

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

When you say you couldn't get your index page back, do you mean in the visual editor in order to work on it? Is blog index available in the drop down for the switch page section in the visual editor?
