Default Seo on Wordpress site
I have a word press site, and I've added my url to google and various others i would like to do some more Seo on the site. I'm looking for some advice on how to add tags without it being visible on my wordpress pages, I also download a plugin called al in one seo but nothing happened so I think I didn't do something quite right there. I know wordpress has got great seo already but would like to know if theres more that I can do to optimise the site.

Thanks

Hi Bev!

You can add meta tags and a meta description to your site by going to Design ---> Theme Editor and then clicking on the header.php file. See this link for info on how to add meta tags. Please note that adding meta tags is only part of SEO. Your content needs to be keyword rich and relevant to the clientele you want to attract.

You can also add alt tags to your images (I think I did most of that for you!). To do that, go into Manage --->Media (I think that's right) and make sure all of the images and files have a short, descriptive phrase in the "alt" box.

Again, your content is the most important thing here. It's a good idea to use Google Analytics to see what people are searching for. Your content will probably end up being revised often - and that's a good thing to do!

If you want professional SEO help, Shari Sultana does a great job!

Is your All-in-One SEO plugin activated? (On the plugins menu on right side of screen) If it is, you should be able to edit your SEO options in the 'Settings' area (link on right of screen)

Download the Google Analytics Plugin for Wordpress: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...for-wordpress/ - then you just insert the code into the plugin where prompted.

For Tagging, I use the Simple Tags plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-tags/ - it's a great, easy-to-use tool that allows you to tag each post individually, as well as reference related posts using tags.

Download all these plugins then upload them into the following directory: wp-content/plugins.

Plugins make the wordpress world go 'round

Hi Bev!

Google analytics wants the code to be inserted before the /body tag. To find this, go to Design-->Theme Editor and then look for the footer.php file. You should see the /body tag somewhere near the top of that file. If it's not there, try the very end of the main index template file.

Also, are you using an FTP program to upload your plugin? For your particular site, you have to first go into the folder called public_html. That's where you'll find the wp-content/plugins folder. Make sure you upload the entire plugin folder to the wp-content/plugins folder...not just the contents.

I hope that helps! Post back if you have any trouble!

I saw a great video by Matt Cutts (of Google) about this very thing. It was a one hour lecture he gave at Wordcamp in 2007. It's called Whitehat Seo tips for Bloggers. Matt gives great ideas on how to improve your blog's visibility in Google. You can watch it here

This is all great info and I was going to try and follow along without having to ask a lot of questions. I too want to make sure I get the most out of my Wordpress Blog. BUT, am going to show how much I don't know, by telling you I can't even get past the first answer. When I go to Design, I see Themes, but nothing that says Theme Editor. I do see CSS Editor........is that the same thing? I didn't think so, but I may just be confused as usual.

Thanks
Denise
