I know how to get the shortlink and post it that way, but can I set it up automatically so that the blog will send it out without me having to copy paste the short link and description to twitter and linkedIn?

Hi Rhonda,

Linkedin has an application that you can use to automatically import your Wordpress Blog. I can't remember the name of it, but when you are logged into LinkedIn Scroll down and look at the bottom of the items shown in the right hand column, you find an add an application link and you'll be able to find the Wordpress/Blog Application there.

For Twitter, if you use Hootsuite to manage your twitter account you can add an RSS Feed in the settings of Hootsuite and then have it automatically update, or alternatively if your Wordpress is self-hosted you can add one of many plugins for twitter. I use Twitter Tools and this allows me to automatically have my post sent to Twitter when it goes live.
