Default Do you approve/moderate your comments
I am starting my own blog and doing some research on blogging. I came across another blog that said the best way to suck the life out of a blog was to moderate your comments. Theses were the basic opinions:
  1. Don't approve/moderate or worry about approving comments at all
  2. Approve/moderate all comments except spam. The negative are necessary to carry on conversation
  3. Approve/moderate after comments are posted taking out all spam and any posts that have distasteful language or comments.
I would really like to hear if you approve/moderate you blog's comments and why?

Thanks,
Shannon

Shannon, personally I approve all comments before allowing them to be published. I find it's better to take a couple of minutes to do that than have all sorts of weird and/or nonsense posts showing up.

Sionnan--wow...great topic! I think you have a point. The negative would cause be a great catalyst for conversation (except spam). Everyone understands that the comments aren't a representation of you or your company. They stand alone really.

I have a blog for a medical condition and I approve all comments. I was bombarded by a woman, who wanted me to join her blog, as hers covers the same topic as mine. By the nature of her posts on my blog, she wanted to "steal" folks away from my blog. For something that doesn't take a lot of time, and that will protect your blog from folks, who have their own agendas, it's worth it to moderate.

I've done both, but I think for the sake of keeping the conversation going and building a community, not moderating comments is the best. People like to see their comments show up immediately.

That said, I do use a comment plugin that helps weed out SPAM comments. Occasionally it will either put a legitimate comment in the SPAM file or allow a sneakier SPAM message through to the comments it's worked pretty well so that I don't have to moderate.
As for negative comments, my personal choice is to allow negative comments unless they are vulgar or inflammatory. I also have a comment policy on my blog that tells people that any comments that I feel are inappropriate may be deleted. It allows me a recourse if I delete a particularly offensive comment and the culprit complains.

aaahh - blog comment spam . I personally would have comment approval turned on - yes it may be a tad annoying for the commenter but they don't have to wait THAT long if you check your comments regularly enough. It saves you having to go through deleting annoying spam.

I use Askimet and Disqus and don't currently have any spam comment issues.

Unless you're using those I would say definitely moderate before publishing OR allow them to be published and spend time checking every day to weed out the rubbish. Spam comments aren't negative comments, they're completely off topic, point to **** or are written in such dreadful English with spammy backlinks that they don't make sense!

I use Askimet to check for spam which seems to work really well. I do moderate, but once I accept your comment the next time you come in and use the same email/website they your comment is automatically approved. I've noticed recently on my blog many have changed their email or website address which then forces me to approve or not.

I like this feature the best. Especially for those that continuously come back and comment which I get many that do.

Askimet sounds like a great tool! I have to admit though...I haven't had any trouble with people commenting on my blog. No one ever does! LOL! I just hope someone's reading it. LOL!

It's better to moderate them. If you don't you end up with all sorts of spam on your blog.
