Default BOOK REVIEW - 31 Days to Build a Better Blog
31 Days to Build a Better Blog (31DBBB) by Darren Rowse is truly a must-read for anyone who wants to get the most out of their blogs.

As the title suggests, this book is broken down into 31 sections, or “days,” although the author points out in the introduction that readers can follow at their own pace, whether that means reading one section per day, three sections per day, or three sections per week.

Each section has a specific title that tells exactly what that section will cover. For example, the first section is called, “Write an elevator pitch for your blog.” Within each section, the author provides any necessary information, such as a description of an elevator pitch in the first section; explains why the step is important for bloggers; and assigns a task for readers to do on their own.

But you’re never completely on your own…the author created an online forum just for 31DBBB readers, with sections for each day’s tasks, where readers can interact with other participants, ask questions, and get feedback on their work. At the end of each chapter in the book, the author provides a link back to the corresponding forum section and encourages you to head there to complete your experience.

While the chapters are fairly short (typically 2-5 pages) and can be read fairly quickly, they are full of thoroughly-explained, useful information that gets you thinking about ways to improve your blog. There is definitely no fluff here! The author discusses many innovative methods of coming up with relevant content and capturing loyalty in your readers. Other topics include inspiring specific action from your readers, driving traffic to your blog, and developing an editorial calendar for your blog.

In the sections that seem to be geared toward blogs that are already somewhat established (ie. “Email a blog reader,” which assumes that you have readers to email), he includes an addendum at the end of the chapter for brand-new bloggers who are still trying to capture regular readers.

I highly recommend that anybody who blogs for business purposes reads this book. You may want to print a hard copy of this electronic book and put it in a three-ring binder for easy reference. And keep a highlighter handy…you’ll need it! I also want to note that I found the author’s writing style to be extremely down-to-earth, friendly, and patient as he describes the blogging tips and techniques that have helped him develop many successful blogs (including ProBlogger).

This e-book was published in 2009 and contains 94 pages.

Thanks for another fine review, Tammi. I actually took the course when Darren was offering it online (along with, I think, 10,000 others!) and got a lot out of it even though I'd been blogging for some time.

OMG, I just looked at the link for this book, and can't believe how low the price is. Probably every blogger should just go ahead and get it.

Oops - yeah, I normally post the price and I completely spaced it! But yes, it's offered at a very affordable rate ($19.95 if memory serves), which is just another reason why I recommend that anyone who's trying to build their business blog picks up a copy!

Hi Tammi,

I've been reading the reviews you do on related books, and wanted to say thank you so much for doing this. It is so helpful to hear what others in our field have to say about a book BEFORE spending the money on it.

But I have a question about this particular book since it's an e-book ~ this will show my ignorance of modern technology, so please set me straight. When you purchase an e-book you have to print it out (using your own paper, printer ink, etc.) if you want to actually have it on paper; otherwise you can save it to your computer & use for reference later ~ correct? {{My older eyes find it difficult to look at the computer more than necessary (which does concern me, but I'm working on it), so I really prefer to have books/reference material in printed form.}} For these reasons, e-books don't hold the same appeal to me.

But this book sounds appealing because I'd really like to (in spite of the eye thing) get into blogging. I looked it up on Amazon which has the book (I believe that means an actual book they will send me) for $15.74. Can I assume it's the same?? Sorry to sound so newbie!

Tess - The Amazon edition is a paperback, I believe (if we're looking at the same product there!). You can get it for $13 used!

Know what you mean about reading lengthy text online. Just can't get used to it.

Go on and buy it, it'll be worth the investment, for sure.

Thanks Mary ~

I'm making a list from the reviews of all the VA books that look the best, this being one of them ~ with the Amazon low prices, there's really no reason to not just buy a bunch ~ tax write-off!

Have a good Friday everyone!

Hi Tess,

I'm right there with you...completely prefer to hold a paper copy in my hands as opposed to reading it online. I spend enough time on the computer for work all day, and my eyes need a break once in a while! I actually printed out my copy of Darren's e-book myself and put it in a 3-ring binder for easy access. But might be easier just to buy the paperback and save yourself the trouble!

Thanks, Mary, for jumping in with an answer to Tess' question.

Tammi,
That's exactly what I do when I print out any book, put it in a 3-ring binder. Glad to see I am not alone.
So nice to be a part of this forum.

Mary,
In addition to it being hard on your eyes when you read a book on line, when you have a hard copy you can always refer back to you much easier.

I've been a follower of Darren Rowse for a long time on his problogger.net blog. If you have a blog and you aren't reading his, you really should start doing so. Based on the very valuable content I've always gotten from his blog, I also bought 31 Days to Build a Better Blog. It really is very good, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Darren has also just started a forum for the problogger community. It is a pay forum, but I think the cost is worth it. The only problem is that the cost is about to go up (either tonight or tomorrow night, I can't remember which). It's currently $1.95 per month and I think it's going up to $5.95, I think. The forum is at http://problogger.com (the blog is http://problogger.net).
