Default Blogging - How Personal Do You Go?
Hi everyone,

I've been mulling over a conundrum for a few weeks now, in regards to blogging.

See, I'm a very passionate person. I have a lot of view points and I have an opinion on almost anything, especially in regards to political and social ideas.

However, I was always told that, basically, having ideas on these things is best not brought up in work, and for years the only one I would talk to about 'stuff' is my very close friends.

My problem, then, is that I feel as though I'm an incredibly dry person who is literally doing everything possible to drown out my personality, and I know that's not interesting to, well, anyone. Every single blog I read, I read because they're opinionated and personal.

However, I also read mostly blogs from people who aren't VAs.

I'm honestly not sure I can continue writing a blog as someone without a 'personality' as it were, but I'm worried that if I start sprinkling in my thoughts, that I'll alienate potential clients.

So how do you walk that line? How do you write something interesting and engaging while avoiding the 'too personal or opinionated' part? Is it possible? Am I worrying to much about it?

How did you find your comfort area in regards to blogging?

You are not worrying too much about it!

While I would not stop doing business with someone simply because they have differing political or religious views from me, if in the course of doing business, that owner expressed something derogatory about my views or indicated that they support something that I find morally repugnant, then I would look for someone else to do business with. I saw an incredibly sexist bumper sticker in the shop window of a car repair business. I'm sure the owner thought it was cute & funny, but I was offended enough to leave immediately.

Can't you keep a personal blog, one for friends & online communities that are like minded, & also a professional blog where you can discuss business issues?

Miss Admin,

I keep my blog attached to my website strictly business and to the point. I add some of my humor to the blog here and use my facebook page and personal blog for the "real" me. What I usually do is write something, save and revisit in a day or so. If I think it needs a second set of eyes I send to a very dear friend who is business savy for her opinion.

Keep in mind that the blog here is public so I write with that in mind but I don't want to bore you all to death so I add a little humor.

I have three blogs. One is strictly business and I try hard to keep my religious and political beliefs out of it. They slip in a little because it's who I am but I do my best to keep them separate. I also have a personal blog that I let my personal beliefs shine through and a blog that I post religious thoughts/discussions on. I don't hide any of my blogs, anyone can go to any of them if they wish. My business website only has direct links to my business blog. But, someone could very easily find my personal blogs if they wanted to.

My personal beliefs are part of who I am. I respect people who's beliefs are different from mine and have no problem working with them. However, they also need to respect my beliefs. One of my closest professional colleagues and I are complete polar opposites in our religious and political beliefs. It doesn't affect our business relationship...we know we differ and don't discuss those things. I don't try to change her beliefs and she doesn't try to change mine...we just keep them separate.

I had thought about setting up a blog for the more personal posts, and I may still do that, but I think mostly I was just concerned of walking a thin line (for me), which is too dry and boring and too opinionated and oversharing.

I think it stems from the fact that I'm almost completely inept at handling the middleground between aquantance and good friends, maybe! Seems like it's always one or the other with me!

Hopefully it will come with more practice and my blog can become more spicy without being too alienating to those of a different mindset.

Hi Miss Michelle...for me, each blog we had or article we wrote, either it's personal or business blog, still there will be always a touch of us, our personality and opinion...even how professional the topic might be.
