I'm still trying to figure out blogging. My client is ready to blog and wants to know where to start. She also wants to know how to market her blog. She is an executive coach.

She has a website so should I suggest she host it herself and then set it up with Wordpress.org (using the great tutorials here) or should I start with Wordpress.com and have an external hosted blog? Does this make sense? LOL...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Lori,

Your client should work on a self hosted blog. She will have ownership of her blog and she can put it on a domain. Then she can market her blog and have a lot more opportunities. Wordpress is a fabulous tool and great to use however is not a learn overnight type of thing. It is easy to post a blog, edit a blog etc however to design it is another story. There are many tricks you need to know about it. I In regards to marketing it you need to do various sem things such as article marketing, press releases, social networking, submitting site to directories, bookmarking sites etc.

There is a lot of things to do and the best bet would be to do a internet marketing course or ebook. There are loads of sites with great into in cyber world. I have a Internet marketing ecourse/ebook that I am working on and almost ready. I think you and your client would benefit immensely.

Thank you for your help Serena and Tammy! That being said, as she wants to do this sooner rather than later, would it make sense to start with a wp hosted blog and switch it to our own domain later once we know what we're doing? Can that be done?

Lori,

No problem. You are better off to have a self hosted blog from the start. You can contact wordpress and fnd out if that can be done but honestly I don't know if it can. Having a self hosted blog is actually pretty easy adn much easier to market online. When it is not self hosted you can lose your blog at anytime. Doesn't happen often but it does happen. Many people have a blog and then something goes wrong with the hosted site such as blogger or wordpress and they lose everything. When it is self hosted you own the blog. Something to think about.
