Default Blog vs Website! What's the difference?
For all of you website & blog creators I'd like to know what the difference is between these two items. I'm guessing that an actual website can get a little more complicated when it comes to creation. Why would a VA choose one or over the other?

A blogsite is built on a blog framework, like Wordpress, rather than html coding. Since it's original purpose was for blogs, the index page is automatically set up so that you can easily add posts through the 'dashboard' or administration area and they appear on the main page of your site. You can also add additional pages, for example pages for your services, about your company, etc. which can be created and added through the same interface as adding a blog post. (Very similar to writing messages here on the forum actually.)
By applying a theme, you can get different looks and personalize it with your own graphics, headers, etc. There are tons of themes to choose from, some are free, but I've found that the ones that allow the most personalization are the paid ones. The one's I've bought were well worth the cost. And then there are plug-in that allow you to do all kinds of cool things like adding contact forms and just about anything else you could possibly think of.
As to why a VA might choose a blogsite over a traditional website. I can only speak for myself. I felt that having a blog was vital in my marketing plan and after seeing some of the fantastic looking blogsites out there, I decided to take the plunge. I have no regrets. The ease of adding and changing my content, images, pages and posts saves me tons of time. And that's important because I like to change things alot.
I think it allows me to have a very up to date look and feel to my website, and it was less expensive than hiring someone to build a traditional website for me.

Tina answered this perfectly, but I am going to go ahead and include a fun little interview I conducted with another VA friend to answer this very question for my blog readers. http://www.darkbluesun.com/WP/blog-sites-or-web-sites/
(Sometimes, it's just fun to blog in interview form. ♥)

I have to say that Tina said it all - I chose a blog site over a HTML website as it's easier to update and maintain [apart from the coding, but you do learn!]

I have no regrets in making my site a wordpress site, but I'll probably be cursing myself whenever I have to move servers....!!!!

Tina, this is so-o-o informative! Can you transfer a regular website which is already up over to a WordPress blog platform and host it yourself?

Julie, Are you asking if it's possible or if Tina can do this for you? If you are asking if it's possible to move a website from html or maybe Dreamweaver over to WordPress, then yes, I do that all the time for people.

If you have never used wordpress, I might suggest that you try starting a "test" blog at wordpress.com and make sure it's something you like and want to learn. It doesn't give you near the options as a self-hosted wordpress site, but you get the feel for it anyway.

I WordPress myself.

Julie,
Amber already answered the question perfectly, so I'll just agree with her.
Wordpress is a fantastic format and keeps getting better. I recommend it to all of my clients, even those who don't necessarily want to blog simply because of the ease of making changes and additions.

I was interested in the idea that I might be able to host and/or update my website myself and therefore make changes or additions whenever I wanted to. I have a great person who makes changes for me but it takes him so long to get to it. I was just wondering if changing it over is very hard...I'm not very techno savvy about these things. There are just so many wonderful suggestions on this forum that I can see I am going to be spending a lot of time trying them all out.

A Wordpress blog can be easily a website. That's how good WP is...and all you need is to get the right WP theme and your all set.

Does anyone know a good resource site to learn how to transfer HTML (site built in Dreamweaver) over to Word Press? Thanks!
