But, I do agree with you're opinion on this. I fully agree with if you know how to manipulate a template's CSS/HTML then you are better off making the template your own in the long run.
I have seen so many sites that all look the same. The only difference being is the color.
If you really want your site to stand out from the rest learning a little html/css is a great way to give your site the zing it needs.
