The downside seems to be that on the freelance sights, you end up having to work for peanuts, and if you end up retaining anyone as a client, they will continue to expect to pay you peanuts. I was frankly appalled at the rates paid for completed jobs on some of these sites. 10 hours of work done for $25? I don't think it's worth it other than as experience to add to your CV.
