I do a fair few email campaigns for clients and yes to a degree they do work - I think the main point for most of my clients is the visibility it gives them - even if the person receiving the newsletter/email is not currently a customer they still know that the service/product is available when they do decide to buy/contract or whatever. It's a low cost and easy way to keep in touch with people.
