I had a woman about three months back ask for a review of her site ("why aren't my visitors buying from me!"). Aside from the fact that each page was a new adventure in colors and backgrounds, next to EVERY link she had an animated gif that was completely unrelated to the link. The favorite being a flapping Tweety Bird.
Sometimes I just want to tell them to look at really successful sites - the BIG corporate sites and see if they use Tweety Bird next to their links, or falling sparkles, or butterfly cursors.
As a novice Web Designer, I think the only reason I started using Verdana font was because it was the font of choice of Amazon.com at the time.
