Marie, if you're buying a standard US type domain, i.e. .com., .net, .biz, etc you shouldn't have to pay any more than $10USD per annum for one of these. Country specific domains will often cost more - here in Australia some registrars sell them for over $100AUD for 2 years. I have found a registrar where I can get a .com.au for $38AUD for 2 years. But all my other domains I pay less than $10USD per annum for. I'm a reseller for GoDaddy.com so actually get them cheaper. If you go through GoDaddy.com or one of their resellers you'll have an easy control panel access for maintaining your domain, including set up of email accounts and pointing your domain to a webspace when you're ready to have a website up. In fact, many registrars these days have control panel access so you can do it all yourself.
