I do suggest you give it another try. I thought it was a pretty decent book and was impressed with his ability to write in a conversational tone while providing tons of information and examples.

I don't believe he strayed to far from the writing that he does on his blog. It's funny that you mention this point, because someone else I know that read the book felt like it was reading an expanded blog post (this person also enjoyed the book).
