My grandfather and father dabbled in many things. My grandfather left home at 18 (1924). He eventually learned to weld and traveled the country picking up jobs for a while. After he married and my dad came along, he owned a cinderblock company, a gas station, a small coal mine, and a welding company. He also helped to build, and retired from the local E.I. DuPont Comany plant. When my dad graduated high school, he became a welder, worked for my grandfather in the gas station, retired from a union job, and co-owned the welding company with my grandfather. He then ran a small trucking company for about 10 years.
Since I was a girl, I was not privvy to business discussions. That was just for the men and my grandmother, who kept the books.
